Jean Eleanor Montgomery1,2

F, b. January 10, 1929, d. June 7, 2009
Her Social Security Number was 223-30-7242.3 Jean Eleanor Montgomery was buried at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville, Iredell Co., North Carolina.1 She was born on January 10, 1929 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,3 As of June 19, 1947,her married name was Gwaltney.2 She married James Edward Gwaltney, son of Charles Edward "Charlie" Gwaltney and Virgie Ellen King, on June 19, 1947 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2 Jean Eleanor Montgomery and James Edward Gwaltney were divorced on February 16, 1952 at Roanoke, Virginia.4 Jean Eleanor Montgomery died on June 7, 2009 at Mooresville, Iredell Co., North Carolina, at age 80.1,3 She Jean Montgomery Young, 80, of Mooresville, N. C., passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2009, following a brief, but valiant battle with brain cancer. Born in Roanoke, Va. on January 10, 1929, Jean was the daughter of Charles W. and Sarah Blanche Montgomery. When her husband was transferred to Charlotte in 1961, Jean and their three children joined him, and the family has remained in this area since that time. Jean began a long career in hotel/motel management in the 1960's. She managed properties for Ramada Inns and Holiday Inns, and in the nineties, she co-managed The Winds Resort in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. During those years, she and her husband resided at Sunset Beach, N.C. and enjoyed their times with family visits on the shore. Jean always loved the beach and was never seen without a fully toned tan, and a flawless sense of fashion and style. Just a few months before her 80th birthday, she was a model in a Belk, Inc. display of autumn classics. For the last ten years of her life, Jean worked in the office of Belk Mooresville, where she developed her usual array of long lasting friendships with co-workers. Jean's family was the focus of her life. A devoted mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and great-grandmother, she always placed the needs of her family before her own. Even in times of her recent illness, she strived to ensure that her children and grandchildren were well take care of. She was also an avid, life-long bowler, and has participated in league bowling since 1958. Jean's recent years, though wrought with tragedy, were still precious to her and to her family. Nineteen months ago, her oldest child, Michael, passed away due to complications following a stroke. In November of 2008, Hayden Young, her beloved husband of 56 years, lost his battle with lung cancer. Eight weeks later, her mother-in-law, Edith Collins Young, succumbed to the natural aging process at 98. Within two months, she learned that a brain tumor was sapping her strength. Despite aggressive treatment, she was unable to recover. This magnificent woman will be sorely missed by her many adoring friends and family. Jean is survived by her daughter, Patricia Young Claiborne; her son, Donald N. Young; son-inlaw, Paul Claiborne; daughters-in-law, Cathy Gwaltney and Kathy Rollins; sister, Hazel M. Johnson; grandchildren, Kimberly Connell, Michael Gwaltney, Jr., Keri L. Stocks, Leslie K. Netta, Alex Claiborne, Joshua Young and Jordon Young; and great-grandchildren, Kristin Lawson, Andrew Lawson, Ethan Gwaltney, Evan Gwaltney, Samuel Netta, and arriving later in June, Abby Netta. Services for Mrs. Young will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 12 noon at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. Officiating will be Oliver Helsabeck, Pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church, which Mrs. Young attended. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Glenwood Memorial Park. Jean's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Melody Worsham, with Hospice & Palliative Care, Darla Corah, with Home Instead, and Kimberly Rippy and Dr. Warden Woodard with Carolinas Hematology and Oncology, for their steadfast, attention care of Mrs. Young. The family of Mrs. Young is being served by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. on June 8, 2009.1
