Cannaday and Demaris Catherine Graham, on August 6, 1885 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,8 William Jackson "Jack" Poff married Lula Alice Poff, daughter of William Anthony Lemuel Poff and Cordelia Christine "Della" Wimmer, on October 19, 1904 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.9 William Jackson "Jack" Poff Well known county man blows out his brains with shotgun. Victim of melancholia which dethroned his reason and caused the rash act shortly after noon today. Mr. W. J. Poff, familiarly known to his many friends in Salem and Roanoke County as "Jack" Poff, placed the muzzle of a double-barrel shotgun to his head shortly after noon today and pulled the trigger, the load tearing away the top of his head and scattering his brains about the little counting room and the rear of the store at Glenvar where the rash act was committed. The news of the sad tragedy was received with the most profound sorrow in Salem where Mr. Poff was very popular. Ill health the cause. Mr. Poff had been in extremely bad health for many months and little hope of his complete recovery was entertained. For some time he had been under the treatment at the orthopedic hospital in Philadelphia, and had been at home about only two weeks. During his stay at home his condition had become worse and he had planned to return tomorrow to Philadelphia to continue the treatment. It is probable that brooding over his condition and his enforced separation from his family temporarily dethroned his reason and causeed the idea of self destruction to enter his mind, weakened by disease. Was alone at the time. Shortly before the tragedy Mr. Poff came from his home and entered the store of Poff & Poff, in which he had recently sold his interest to his brother Mr. W. A. Poff. He retired at once to the little counting room and the rear of the store, as he frequently did and nothing was thought of at the matter until a short time later his nephew, Mr. Bernece Poff, who was on the porch in front of the store, was startled to hear the report of the gun. Hastening to the little room he was horrified to find his uncle lying in a pool of his own blood and gasping his last. The corner had been same summoned just before this paper went to press shortly after the tragedy. Mr. Poff, together with his brother W. A. Poff came to Glenvar about eight years ago from Floyd County. They purchased the estate known as the "Deyerle place" and also the store at Glenvar. He has succeeded well in business and is generally considered wealthy. He had been twice married, a daughter Miss Clarice by the first wife, together with his second wife and a daughter two years old survive him. His home life was ideal and the family are prostrated over the tragedy. on October 5, 1911.10 He died on October 5, 1911 at Glenvar, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 45.5,10,6
