She was a member of the first Methodist Church in Princeton and was born at Oakvale, the daughter of the late Andrew and Matilda Thornton. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. E. L. Holt, and a son, John Clayton Holt. Survivors include two sons, Herbert Holt of Toledo, Ohio, and Chauncey Holt of Yucaipa, Calif; five daughters, Mrs. J. K. Hilsheimer of Huntington, Mrs. G. E. Shumate of Princeton, Mrs. M. V. Engleman of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. J. R. Johnson of Waynesboro, Va., and Mrs. J. G. Conner of Rock; 18 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Oak Wood Cemetery in Princeton. on August 15, 1968.⁵

He was the president and managing broker of Virginia Realty Co. and Homemaker Inc. An Ocean View native, he attended Ocean View Elementary, and was a graduate of Granby High School. He attended the College of William and Mary (Norfolk Division) where he played on the lacrosse team. He served in the U.S. Army and upon completion of Officer Candidate School served as first lieutenant on the 246th Field Artillery Missile Battalion during the Korean War. After serving his country, he returned to Norfolk and was employed at Virginia Realty Co. owned then by his father, the late W.F. Thornton Sr. He began building and developing in the Ocean View area in the mid-1950s. He is known for pioneering and securing a stronghold for Ocean View's revitalization efforts by helping organize the Ocean View Coordinating Committee. He also worked closely with other community leaders and members by serving on the Norfolk's Mayoral Committee for many years. He consistently pushed for recognition and funding for the Ocean View area with Norfolk's Redevelopment Housing Authority when there was none. As a community leader, he helped promote Ocean View's most famous events in their beginning stages and for years to follow such as the First Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, the First Annual Ocean View Beach Festival, the First Annual Ocean View Art Festival, and provided a home for the Ocean View Station, a local museum, for many years. He served as past director and longtime chair holder of the Tidewater Board of Realtors, National Board of Realtors, and Metro Multiple Listing Service. He, with the combined efforts of other local Realtors and developers, built a strong foundation of ethics and professionalism in the area's real estate industry that has made Hampton Roads what it is today. He loved to talk and inspire others with stories about the golden days of Ocean View; from the smells of baked bread from an Ocean View bakery and riding the streetcar to downtown Norfolk to the glory days of the Ocean View Amusement Park during the 1940s. Growing up during that era and knowing Ocean View's history and good fortune as one of our country's largest natural harbors is why he fought so hard for its preservation and positive development, leading the way for our generations to come. He is survived by a most loving wife, Gloria Burke Thornton; his children, Stephen R. Thornton, Debra Thornton Willyerd and her son, Christopher, Wilbur F. ``Billy'' Thornton III, Andrea Mariah Thornton and Stephen R. Thornton II, all of Norfolk; a sister, Bertie Lee Slatton and her husband, the Rev. Dr. James Slatton, of River Road Baptist Church in Richmond; two nephews, Stewart and David and a niece, Elizabeth. He has many beloved cousins and loyal friends. His love and his generous heart were known by many and will be for years to come. Burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. on February 27, 2000.¹

     Elberta Lee "Bertie" Thornton SLATTON, Elberta Lee, 83, of Henrico County, died September 8, 2018. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia, May 2, 1935, the daughter of Fleta and Wilbur F. Thornton Sr. She is survived by her husband, James H. Slatton of Henrico County; two sons and daughter, Stewart Slatton, David Slatton and Elizabeth Higgins (Joseph); and two grandchildren, Lillian Slatton and Samuel Higgins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, W.F. Thornton Jr. Lee (or "Bertie Lee" as she was known during her younger years), was a classical pianist and organist who loved playing and hearing the works of such composers as Schubert, Brahms, Ravel and Granados. She was a pedagogical descendent of Leschetizky. A class officer, cheerleader and graduate of Granby High School, Norfolk, she attended Greensboro College for a year and graduated two years later with a B.A. in music and religion from Baylor University. She established and maintained a studio in her home for the teaching of private piano lessons for 55 years. Her first studio was in Dallas, Texas, her second in Altavista, Virginia, the third in Dallas once again, and her last, from 1972 to 2013, in Henrico County. She was certified for the teaching of piano by the Music Teachers National Association and was a member and energetic promoter of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. She was also a member and for a time an officer of the Richmond Music Teachers Association and a member of the Richmond Music Study Club, the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Leschetizky Society. Having grown up "two blocks from the beach" in Ocean View, Norfolk, she was a strong swimmer and preferred spending vacation time at the beach. Lee was a devoted wife and a nurturing mother and grandmother. Vivacious and outgoing, she was always a dedicated member and church worker in the congregations in which her husband served during their 62-year marriage. Their congregations were: South Lancaster Baptist Church, Dallas; First Baptist, Altavista, Virginia; Royal Lane, Dallas; and River Road Church, Baptist, Richmond.⁵ She was buried at River Road Church Baptist Columbarium, 8000 River Road, Tuckahoe, Henrico Co., Virginia.⁶ She was born on May 2, 1935 at Norfolk, Virginia.^3,5,6 As of July 21, 1956,her married name was Slatton.⁴ She married Rev.      Betty Jo Thornton Betty Jo Helmick, 92, of Scott Depot, passed away Tuesday August 22, 2017 at Broadmore Assisted Living. She was born November 8, 1924 to the late Bryon and Roxanne Thornton in Williamson. She was also preceded in death by her husband Hays Edward Helmick and son William Alen Helmick. She was an active member of the Perrow Presbyterian Church, Cross lanes. She was a schoolteacher at Scott Teays Elementary School for many years. She is survived by her sons, Lyle Helmick (Jeanne) of Scott Depot, Bradley Helmick (Carolyn) of Scott Depot; brother Bryon Thornton of Kermit; grandchildren, Lyndsay Arnett (Ted) of St Albans, Morgan Stow (Eddie) of Cross Lanes, Lee Helmick of Scott Depot, Lauren Copley (Josiah) of Chandler AZ, and Kelsea Helmick of Scott Depot; and many other extended family and friends.      Byron Walter Thornton Jr. Byron Walter Thornton, Jr. - Byron “Windy” Thornton, 91, of Kermit, West Virginia, passed away on August 17, 2024. Byron was a lifelong resident of Kermit. He was born in Kermit on January 20, 1933 to the late Byron W. Thornton, Sr. and Roxie Carlton Thornton. He is survived by two daughters, Elaine Endicott (Dr. J.W.) of Kermit and Leslye Thornton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; two sons, B.W. Thornton, III (Dr. Alice) of Lexington, Kentucky and James Thornton (Karon) of Raleigh, North Carolina; and eight grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Endicott of Hurricane, West Virginia and Katherine Endicott of Kermit, Matthew Thornton (Kallie) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Zachary Thornton of Cincinnati, Ohio, Benjamin Thornton of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Madeline Thornton of Durham, North Carolina, Sam Thornton of Raleigh, North Carolina and Clay Thornton of Durham, North Carolina. Byron is predeceased by his wife, Ruth Marcum Thornton. He is also predeceased by his sister, Betty Jo Helmick of Teays Valley, West Virginia. Byron was a graduate of Kermit High School and Marshall College, where he received his degree in Retail Marketing. While in high school, he was a member of the 1950 Class B state runner-up basketball team. At Marshall, he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and active in the jazz ensemble. An accomplished drummer, Byron spent several years as a member of various “big band” jazz groups playing for dances and gatherings in the Tug Valley and Tri-State area. Byron worked alongside his mother, Roxie, and his wife, Ruth, as co-owner of Thornton’s Department Store in Kermit. Thornton’s provided family clothing to the surrounding Kermit area for 47 years until Byron and Ruth retired in 1995. After retirement, Byron began working at the Warfield Branch of the Inez Deposit Bank where he could be found interacting with patrons. Byron and Ruth were married on November 24, 1954 at the Kermit United Methodist Church. The couple then spent 18 months in Germany where Byron was serving in the United States Army. The couple resided with a German family in Weinheim, Germany and traveled to various locations throughout Europe. Byron was a man of strong Christian faith and life-long member of the Kermit United Methodist Church where he served many leadership roles. Byron was also a leader in the surrounding Kermit area, serving on the board of directors of many organizations and foundations. Byron was an active member in the Kermit Kiwanis Club. An avid sports fan, Byron was instrumental in organizing youth athletics in the Kermit area and led efforts to provide athletic facilities. He was also an integral part of a delegation of Tug Valley area leaders who lobbied Congress in Washington, D.C. to provide adequate flood control measures for communities along the Tug River. Byron was a friend to many. His genuine kindness and personal connection brought happiness to everyone around him. More than anything, Byron’s greatest joy came from being a loving husband, father and grandfather. She was born in Parkersburg, WV on June 29, 1929, the daughter of the late Harold and Lillian Thornton. For over 59 years Margaret was the beloved wife of William (Bill) R. Thayer II and was the loving mother to her sons Thomas Thayer (wife Michele) and Richard Thayer (wife Joan), grandchildren Sean Thayer (wife Tiffanie) and Ryan Thayer, and great-grand children Bronson and Kynlee. Margaret lived a full and wonderful life, loving and caring to her family, friends and others, and was truly from 'The Greatest Generation'. She was born into the great depression, lived through WWII and subsequently attended West Virginia University in 1947. She pledged Alpha Phi sorority and afterward, graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Upon marriage and raising her family, Margaret loved pickin' antiques and selling throughout the years - she loved 'the art of the deal' and being in business with her husband Bill.
