John was born in Detroit, Mich. May 21, 1932, son of the late Louis R. and Ilda P. (nee: DeCook) Tabor. On May 9, 1958, in Detroit, Mich., he was united in marriage to Carol Long. John attended Michigan Technical University and achieved degrees in Civil and Mining Engineering. In 1961, he relocated to Racine, where he owned and operated Tabor Mining Company for 43 years. John's passion for the mining and tunneling profession drove him to become one of the most internationally recognized innovators in the industry. Among his many achievements he developed the world's first mechanized tunneling machines, which have been used in thousands of tunnels throughout the world. These new machines continue to have a tremendous impact making the mining industry safer and more efficient. He was proudest of his safety record in underground mining and tunneling. There was not one fatality or serious accident on a Tabor Mining Company tunneling or underground mining project. Many construction workers owe their lives to John Tabor. John held the title to 13 United States patents and numerous foreign patents. He was a member of the Detroit Yacht Club, Winchester Gun and Sarasota Gun Clubs. His passions included hunting, sailing, flying, and reading. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, who will be dearly missed. Survivors include his loving wife, Carol of Union Grove; his daughter, Robyn (John) Bockrath of Redondo Beach, Calif; his sons, Kraig (Kathy) Tabor of East Troy, Kent (Beth) Tabor of Pewaukee, Keith (Philecia) Tabor of Richfield; his 11 grandchildren, Taylor Bockrath, Tom, Melinda, Tim, Aleysa, Annastasia, and Katy Tabor, Tricia and Ryan Tabor, and Josh and Ben Tabor; his brother, Louis (Aline) Tabor of Park Forest, Ill; sister, Janice Tabor (Bob) Niemeier of Dodgeville; sisters-in-law, Joyce (Jim) Knakal of Redford, Mich., Hope (George) Tedders of Englewood, Fla; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Tabor. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 17, 2004, 11 a.m. with Rev. Jim Niederloh officiating. Interment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. and at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ralph H. Hruban M.D., Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of Pathology, Weinberg Building - Room 2242, 401 North Broadway, Baltimore, Md. 21231 (410-955-9132) in memory of John R. Tabor are suggested. A homemaker, she enjoyed baking cookies and planting flowers. Survivors include a daughter, Ann Bass of Amherst; five grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and sisters Myrtle Copley of Abingdon, Va., and Lois Lucas of Huntington, W.Va. Preceding her in death were her husband, Clifton R; a son, William Robert Hale; her parents, William and Ida Romans; and eight siblings. Friends may call 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. services Tuesday at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave, Amherst. The Rev. Tom Corivja, pastor First Baptist Church, Lorain, and her friends, the Rev. Christopher Robinson and the Rev. Sherman Snider, will officiate. Burial will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. on August 3, 2003.2
