Conner, 85, of the Pettry Road, near Athens, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born March 31, 1925, at Speedway, he was the son of the late Carl and Anna Lee Kessinger Conner. Oakie was educated in Mercer County, and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a retired machinist, having worked for the Virginian Railroad and Norfolk-Southern Railroad with 25 years of service. He was a member of Pettry Church of Christ. Oakie loved farming and raising cattle. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Georgia Blevins, Brookie Meadows, and Gypsie Ringley. Survivors include, his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Alma Jean White Conner; four children and their spouses, Clifford and Sandy Conner of Charleston, Curtis and Nancy Conner of Bluewell, Marlene and Mark Belcher of Speedway, Sandy and Eddie Hill of Lerona; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Conner, Chad Belcher, Dustin Hill, Matthew Hill, Clayton Hill and Joey Ellison. on February 10, 2011.5

Born March 7, 1926 in Pettrey, WV he was the son of the late Clowney Conner and Oney Pettrey. Virgie was retired from the maintenance department at Concord University in Athens and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving as an M.P. in Germany with the rank of Sergeant and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Virgie was a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church in Oakvale who attended regularly when his health permitted. Virgie not only loved his church but was an avid gardener priding himself of his crops and also loved caring for his dogs. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melissa Kay Pennington. Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Clara "Peggy" Crews Conner of Ellgood; two daughters, Donna K. Brown and husband Robert McGraw and Hazel Mae Wimmer and husband Happy all of Elgood; one son, Virgie C. Conner, Jr. of Princeton; five grandchildren, Tara Bland, Shena Wimmer, Shawn Wimmer, Samantha Conner and Andrew Conner; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Terry P. and Minnie Conner Mills; her husband, Wayne F. Wagner and two brothers, Frank Mills and Page Mills. She is survived by her daughter, Jane W. Taylor; four grandsons, Michael Quesenberry (Ashley), Brandon Taylor (Danielle), Jordan Taylor (Grace), Devin Taylor; several nieces, nephews, cousins including Brenda Davis (Stan), Jeff Mills, Randy Jones (Wade), Sarah Jones, Sue Draper (Don), Rose Sweeney and a special friend, Carmilla Tyree. Claudine was born in Copper Hill, Virginia on October 7, 1934. She had been a hairdresser for over 70 years before her retirement and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She loved music and had throughout the years had acquired a collection of cats and frogs. She will be missed by those who knew her. The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice and the neighbors and friends, especially Ruby Bradford for all the care and kindness shown to Claudine. He is also survived by two brothers, Jack and Danny; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by his fur baby “Sam” who was his riding buddy. His laughter, “little jokes” and the unconditional love he showed others will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
