Barger, passed away at his home in Fincastle, on Sunday, January 18, 2004. He was preceded in death by his father R. J. Barger and his mother, Hazel Barger. Surviving is his wife Judy; his daughter, Melinda and son-in-law, Michael Amos; son, Ray and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Barger; sister, Bonnie and brother-in-law, Edgar Crockett; three grandsons, Blake and Brice Amos, Brent Barger; and step granddaughter, Cinnamon Amos; nephew, Chris and wife, Elizabeth Caldwell. He loved and appreciated the longtime friendships of Grant Childress, Lloyd Beckett, Tom Hedrick and Donnie Flora who he counted as family. Lawrence was a lover of horses and in the 1970's and 1980's trained and rode several champion Racking Horses. He was voted Virginia Horseman of the year in 1977. That love of horses continued as he volunteered with the Therapeutic Riding Association. He served on the Board of Directors for three years. He was the owner and manager of the Top Rail Restaurant and Lounge for 10 years, and later the Spurs Restaurant and Lounge. He was happiest when he could hear a good Country Band, ride a good horse, and hunt the hills of Virginia. He always said that he had been born 100 years too late, as he should have been a cowboy. The family would like to thank the staff of Carilion Hospice for their compassionate care during the last days of Lawrence's illness. A special thank you to his nurses, Larry Lewis, Pat Quarles, and also Dr. Alice Inouye, who took the time to show him the love of God. The family would like any memorial gifts to take the form of donations to the Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Association, P.O. Box 456, Boones Mill, Va. 24065. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Ken Nienke and longtime friend Billy "Slam" Duncan. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery, Buchanan. on January 21, 2004.3

The widow of Robert Arlington Webb (of Princeton, NJ) and John Clark Williams (of Raleigh), she was predeceased by her parents, a sister, Mary Mickey, a brother, George Lee, Jr., and three sisters-in-law, Helen Terwillinger Kelley, Ann Fuqua Kelley and Josephine Blakely Kelley. She is survived by her two daughters, Victoria Webb of South Bend, IN, Gina Webb of Atlanta, GA; and her son, Robert Howard Webb of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are her sister, Martha Fare, Belews Creek, NC; and four brothers, Rush of Colorado Springs, CO, Michael of St. Louis, MO, William and wife, Sylvia of Roanoke, VA, Richard and wife, Anne of Rural Hall, NC; and two sisters-in-law, Dulcie (Carl) Williamson of Raleigh, NC, and Edith (George) Kelley of Cary, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd, Virginia, on December 1 at 12 noon. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on September 20, 1923, the sixth child of eight to the late George L. and Elsie P. Kelley. He is preceded in death by his sons, William G. Kelley Jr. and Mark G. Kelley; brother, George L. Kelley Jr; sisters, Nina A. Williamson and Micky Kelley; and special friend, Robert Conrad Eanes. Mr. Kelley was a graduate of North Carolina State University and served his country faithfully as a first lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II and Korea. He was president of Sash, Door and Glass in Richmond and loved golf, traveling, reading and crossword puzzles. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sylvia Oakes Kelley; children, Walter Stuart Dudley and wife, Penny, and Joeylynn Patton; grandchildren, Aaron Blake Patton, Grace Olivia Patton, both of Roanoke and their father, Tommy Patton, and Elizabeth Greer Kelley, of Richmond; brothers, Rush T. Kelley, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael A. Kelley, of St. Charles, Mo., and Richard P. Kelley, of Rural Hall, N.C; sister, Martha A. Fare, of Bellewscreek, N.C; and several nieces and nephews.
