     Herman Montgomery "Bo" McCormick Jr. Herman "Bo" McCormick, Jr. age 77 went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 16, 2006. He was born on November 10, 1928 in Abingdon, VA to the late Herman M. McCormick, Sr. and Flossie Ball McCormick. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda McCormick South and a sister Billie Jo "Polly" Seymore. He was a "public servant" for the Town of Abingdon, VA working in the Public Works Department for 43 years retiring after 34 years as the Public Works Superintendent. He also served in the Abingdon Fire Department for 45 years retiring after 33 years as the Fire Chief receiving Honorary and Life Memberships. Mr. McCormick was a member and trustee of the Damascus Road Baptist Church and served several organizations within the community and State including the Washington County Life Saving Crew where he served as Captain from 1960-1963. He was named Outstanding Crewman of the year in 1963, and was made a Life Member, he served on the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Firefighter's Association, and was the 1968 Past President of the Southwest Virginia Firefighter's Association and was also made a Life Member, he was the first President of the Washington County Firefighter's Associations in 1971, and was a member of the Virginia Fire Chief?s Association. He received the Award for patriotism from the American Federation of Police in 1973, the Samuel A. Greeley Local Government Service Award in 1978, the first Community Builders Award recipient from the Abingdon Masonic Lodge in 1987, and was made a lifetime member of the Abingdon High School Athletic Boosters in 2001. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dora Mae McCormick.
Two daughters; Patricia "Patty" Dove and husband James of Old Hickory, Tennessee, Donna Callahan and husband Kenneth of Hayes, Virginia; two sons, Mark McCormick and wife Christy of Abingdon, VA, John McCormick and wife Susan of Abingdon, VA; son in law, Ronnie South of Abingdon, VA; Nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Howard McCormick and wife Betty of Bristol, VA; one sister, Shirley Widner and Husband Bill of Abingdon, VA, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Herman "Bo" McCormick, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00pm Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in the Abingdon Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Dove (grandson), Rev. John Massey, JR. and Dr. Steven Pollard, and Rev. Paul Bufford officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present members of the Abingdon Town Council, Town Managers, and employees of the Town of Abingdon, past and present members of the Abingdon Fire Department and Fire Department's throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Chief McCormick will lie in state at the Abingdon Fire Station on Monday, September 18, 2006 from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. The family will be present from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. or may be visited at 248 Morning Side Drive, Abingdon, VA. The family appreciated Dr. Bill Moody, Dr. Chris Pile, Louise Sloan, RN, Wanda Farris, RN, Hospice of Southwest Virginia and the Johnston Memorial Hospital 5th floor staff for their special love and care given to Mr. McCormick and his family during his illness. He was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Abingdon, Va. He served his country in the U.S. Army with two years active duty in Korea and 35 years in the Army Reserve, 80th Division, retiring as C SM-E9 in 1987. Howard worked for VDOT in the Bristol, Va. Bridge Division for 37 years. He was a graduate of William King High School and held several engineering certificates through ICS. Howard was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church, a Master Mason with Abingdon Lodge No. 48, and a member of the Western Square Dance Club. His enjoyment was family, church, golf, hunting, and working on his lawn. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Montgomery McCormick and Flossie Lee Ball McCormick; brother, Herman McCormick Jr; sister, Billy Jo Seymore; brothers-in-law, Fred Seymore, Ernest Crenshaw, James Crabtree, and C.W. Kirk; and a special niece, Tracy Crabtree. He is survived by his wife, Betty Counts McCormick; one daughter, Den‚ Jane McCormick of Radford, Va; sister, Shirley Widner and husband, William; sisters-in-law, Dora Mae McCormick, June Crenshaw, Joyce Crabtree and Treva Kirk; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Howard McCormick will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy., Abingdon, VA. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Pleasant View United Methodist Church with the Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wellmont Hospice, Home Health Division, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN 37620; Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA 24210; or one's charity of choice .
