Vest was born Feb. 14, 1885, in Summers County, a son of the late Charles and Mary Ellen Vest. He was a retired miner, having last worked for the Raleigh Coal and Coke Co., a member of the Glen Morgan Community Church, and of the United Mine Workers of America. He had been a resident of Raleigh County for the past 55 years. Survivors include four daughters, Miss Genevieve Vest at home, Mrs. Thelma Young of Glen Morgan, and Mrs. Glenora Amos and Miss Billis Vest, both at home; two sons, Homer of Glen Morgan and Dorsil of Raleigh; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Pack of Jumping Branch, Mrs. Ada Lilly of Nimitz and Mrs. Lou Pack of Cool Ridge; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel Saturday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. L. A. Garten. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Cecil Hatcher, Eugene Hatcher, Clifford Hatcher, Buddy Lilly, Oral Vest, Paul Pack, Claude Allen and David Allen. The body will remain at the funeral home until the funeral hour. on August 6, 1965.4

She loved helping others and traveling. Billie was nicknamed “Grandbo” by her grandchildren because she was a very strong person. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Gill, in August 2003; sisters, Virginia Alice Vest, Glenora “Todie” Amos, Genny Vest and Thelma Young; and brothers, Homer and Dorsil “Farmer” Vest. Survivors include her son, Sam Vest and his wife, Pat, of Glen Morgan; stepdaughter, Virginia Lightle and her husband, Al, of Dearborn Heights, Mich; two stepsons, Darryl Rucker and his wife, Debbie, of Delaware and Howard Rucker of Meadow Bridge; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Cleve Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Survivors include two sisters, Billie Vest Gill of Beckley and Thelma Faye Young of Glen Morgan; a brother, Dorsil (Farmer) Vest of Raleigh; several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Cleve Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley. Smith, 82, of Arnold died May 5, 2004, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was born Feb. 8, 1922, at Arnold to Mynor and Cecil Nansel Smith. He spent his early childhood years attending Garfield Country School. He transferred to the Arnold High School for his junior and senior years, graduating in 1940. On March 8, 1942, he married Mildred Bailey in Western Nebraska and was inducted into military service six months later. He was assigned to the Second Armored Division, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Reconnaissance Platoon. He served in six of the seven European Campaigns. He landed at Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944, and participated in several Central European Campaigns. He was wounded twice, once during the Battle of the Bulge and again during the Rhineland Push. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star and Purple Heart with one Bronze Oakleaf Cluster. He was horably discharged in October 1945. Mr. Smith was a member of the Arnold Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He farmed on Garfield Table with his son, Craig, and grandson, David, up until the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, Mildred of Arnold; a son, Craig (Pam) of Arnold; a daughter, Trudy (Ross) Van Camp of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Leslie Smith of Omaha, David (Tami) Smith of Kearney, Luke Van Camp of Omaha, and Casey Van Camp of Lincoln; two brothers, Bobbie (Gloria) Smith and Max (Joan) Smith, all of Arnold; and a sister, Bonnie Rose of Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mynor and Cecil Smith and a son, Todd Smith. Memorials are suggested to the Arnold Methodist Church and the Arnold School Foundation. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Arnold with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 130 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6157 of Arnold. Visitation is from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Arnold Funeral Home. on May 8, 2004.7
