White, one sister, Mrs. Essie Hannah and two brothers, John and Fred Cheatwood. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Eugene (Louise) Shoop of Miami Beach, Fla; and one brother, Ray B. Cheatwood Sr., of Elgood. Initial funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Cakey Funeral Home Chapel in Roanoke with Rev. Landon C. Mattox officiating. Additional funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Elgood Community Church with Rev. Olin Winfrey officiating. Burial will follow in Elgood Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ivan East, Ward White, Jimmy White, Dempsey Cheatwood, Junior Cheatwood, Red Coffman, Bill Johnston and Joe Thorn. on October 16, 1975.3

He served on the presidential task force for the Republican Party and was an active booster of Athens High School Athletica and Concord College Athletice programs. Born in Elgood, he was a son of the late S. B. and Roena Wickham Cheatwood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lilly Mae Akers Cheatwood in 1980. Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Frank (Sue) Short of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Joe (Jackie) Thorn of Princeton, Mrs. L. K. (Frances) Johnston of Petertown, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Koffman of Rich Creek, Va; sons, Ray B. Cheatwood Jr. and Dempsey Cheatwood, both of Athens; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Elgood Community Church, Elgood, with James Mullins and the Rev. Garland Jones officiating and burial at the Elgood Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Concord Masonic Lodge No. 48. Friends may call at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home, Princeton, from 6 to 9 p.m. today and at the church one hour prior to the service. His proudest golfing achievement was winning the Rusty Coffman Memorial Golf Tournament in its inaugural year. He was a member of the Princeton Moose Lodge No. 1521 and the Hardee's Breakfast Club. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anna Lois White Cheatwood of Athens; one son, Samuel Dempsey Cheatwood Jr. and his wife Brenda of Dublin, Va; one daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Cheatwood Ofsa and her husband William of Athens; two granddaughters, Katherine Ann Miller and her husband Tracy, and Elizabeth Ann Kauff Hill and her husband Stuart; two great grandchildren, Jacob Stuart Hill and Anna Elizabeth Hill; one brother, Ray B. Cheatwood Jr. and his wife Roberta of Princeton; and three sisters, Jackie Thorn and her husband Joe of Princeton, Frances Johnston of Peterstown, and Betty Coffman and her husband Robert of Rich Creek, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at the Mt. View Community Church in Elgood with Pastor Dale Dickman officiating. Burial will follow in the Elgood Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends called at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. View Community Church in Elgood. on May 2, 2006.1

He formerly served as a school bus driver, operated Cheatwood & Sons and J & D Stores and served as postmaster, all in the Elgood area. He also formerly operated Athens Texaco. Ray proudly served his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during World War ll and as a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. During World War ll, Ray was a Prisoner of War for 463 days on a dairy farm at Stalag B in Germany. He served as Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day Parade in 2003, the same year he finally received his Purple Heart after waiting 59 years. Ray was an avid sports fan. His favorites included NASCAR, WVU and LSU football and Princeton Devil Rays baseball. He attended Kellysville Church of God until declining health prevented his attendance. He was a life member of the DAV - Chapter No. 31 and the American Ex Prisoners of War. He was an associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America No. 628. In addition to his parents, one brother, Dempsey Cheatwood, and one sister, Sue Short, preceded him in death. Born in Princeton October 13, 1914 he was the son of the late Charlie and June Scott Thorn. He retired from the City of Princeton in 1968 as Chief of Police. Joe was an avid sports fan. In his early years he played Minor League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corp. during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received at Iwo Jima. Following the war he returned to Princeton in 1945 and started his career with the Princeton Police Department. He worked his way through the ranks and was named Chief of Police in 1959 and remained there until his retirement in 1968. His love of sports and his desire to help children by encouraging athletic participation remained with him all of his adult life. He was one of the area founders of Little League Baseball and Basketball. As a police officer he often recommended sports to troubled youth for self-improvement. Joe was also a member of Concord Masonic Lodge, Princeton Elks Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police and the Concord He-Mans Assoc. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Carlyle Thorn, Charlie Thorn, and Marvin Thorn; and three sisters, Crystal Eads, Mabel "Dutch" White, and Edith Hypes preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of sixty-nine years, Alma Jack Cheatwood Thorn of Princeton; one son, Rod Thorn and wife Peggy of Rye, N.Y; three grandchildren, Jonathan "J.J." Prior to her death, she was under Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Hospice Care. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Brenda; several grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Betty was preceded in death by her spouse, Robert "Red" Coffman Sr., and son, Robert "Rusty" Coffman Jr. She was born in Elgood, West Virginia, on April 15, 1930, to Lillie Mae and Ray Cheatwood where she spent her childhood. After her marriage to Red, they settled in Rich Creek to begin their family and career. In the years that followed, Betty worked and taught with the Mercer County School System, where she was loved and admired by all. She loved the Lord and was a faithful follower of his teachings. Betty longed to meet the Lord and be reunited with her loved ones. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. on December 29, 2020.6

     Robert Ray "Red" Coffman Sr. was buried at Elgood Cemetery, behind the Elgood school and the church, Elgood, Mercer Co., West Virginia.7 His Social Security Number was 232-38-0546.9 He was born on May 17, 1927 at Beelick Knob, Fayette Co., West Virginia.6,9,7 He married Betty Jean Cheatwood, daughter of Ray Bryant Cheatwood Sr. and Lilly Mae Akers, on December 16, 1949 at Narrows, Giles Co., Virginia.5,10,7 Robert Ray "Red" Coffman Sr. died on August 31, 2010 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 83.9,7,8 He Robert Ray (Red) Coffman Sr., formerly of Rich Creek, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, from his home at Pheasant Ridge Retirement Village in Roanoke, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 17, 1927, in the town of Beelick Knob, W.Va., to the late William Edgar and Effie Moody Coffman. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Robert (Rusty) Coffman Jr., who passed away on August 31, 2002; a brother, Charles Coffman; and two sisters, Blanche Gwynn Judy and Louise Harris. On December 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Betty J. Cheatwood in Pearisburg, Va. In 1966, Robert and Betty moved to Rich Creek, Va. After 36 years of service, Robert retired from Appalachian Power Company. One of Robert's greatest loves was operating a bulldozer. He worked with his best friend, J.B. Buckland, clearing properties throughout Rich Creek and Giles County. In 2009, Robert and Betty retired to Roanoke, Va., residing at Pheasant Ridge Retirement Village. Robert was a member of Glen Lyn Church of Christ. Since moving to Roanoke, he attended Penn Forest Christian Church. He was a member of the Kazim Temple and the Giles County Kazim Misfits. Robert is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter-in-law, Brenda; grand-dog, Princess; two grandchildren, Jamie Elliott, of Roanoke, and Cindy Pagans, of Boones Mill; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Timothy Gillis, Treavor and Cody Ray Pagans, and Jacob Elliott; his twin sister, Roberta Mae Walters, of Dennison, Ohio; several nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many special friends. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010, at Glen Lyn Church of Christ in Glen Lyn, Va., with Danny Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Elgood Cemetery at Elgood, W.Va. on September 2, 2010.7

Born Sept. 15, 1908 in Green Springs, she was the daughter of the late David and Marsha Monroe Wiley. She was a retired contractor and an avid traveler. She was formerly active in local, state, and national politics. In addition to her parents, her husband, Fred Hampton Cheatwood; two brothers, Tommy Wiley and Odd Wiley; and one sister, Emma Dunn preceded her in death. Survivors include several nieces and nephews including special niece and caregiver, Sherri Lyn Atkins; one sister, Pauline Wiley Atkins of Princeton; one brother, Eugene F. 'Gene' Wiley of Princeton; and special friend, Jerry Proffitt. In keeping with Mrs. Cheatwood's wishes, the body has been cremated and there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity of choice. Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton is in charge of arrangements. on May 13, 2004.1
