Gowen, one of the oldest and best known engineers of this place, died in Clifton Forge Hospital Tuesday afternoon, after an operation for liver trouble. Mr. Gowen was 48 years of age and was a native of Amherst county, Va. He was an excellent citizen and had resided in Hinton for 25 years. He was the step-father of Messrs. O. H. and Frank Cundiff, and Mrs. C. H. Hetzel, of this place, who with his wife survive him. He was prominent in the B. of L. E., and carried insurance to the amount of $5,000. He was buried here today after funeral services from the 1st Baptist church conducted by Rev. J. P. Campbell. His death is a matter of public regret. on June 1, 1905.11

He was a former owner and operator of the Roanoke Cab Company and operated one of the first rent-a-car franchises in the Roanoke Valley. He was retired from Quickette Food Store in 1978. He was an army veteran of World War II, life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post No. 3, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1264 as well as AMVETS Post No. 40. He was a past chaplain of AMVETS and DAV. Mr. Sisson spent many volunteer hours at the VA Medical Center in Salem and in a special ceremony conducted in Christiansburg in 1989, Mr. Sisson was presented with his World War II Service Medals forty three years after the fact. He attended church services at the chapel at the VA Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Eugenia (Jeany) H. Sisson, Salem; son, Cleatis (Reggie) Sisson, Jr., Roanoke; two daughters, Wanda Lou Henry, Roanoke; Janie Lynn Feury, Salem; three sisters, Gladys Brown of Salem; Allie McCray of Roanoke; Nina Bowers of Floyd; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial will follow at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Full military rites will be provided by the Fourth Highland Brigade of the Virginia State Defense Force on December 26, 1990.1

Funeral services will be conducted form Oakey's North Chapel, 3 p.m. Friday, June 18, with Chaplin George Hamilton and Chaplin Cecil Irwin officiating. Burial will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Oakey's North Chapel where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. on June 17, 1993.2
