Duke, as he was known, came to Nelson in early childhood and lived all his life in Nelson. He served in France during World War I and later became a member of the American Legion. He worked as a telephone lineman and retired in 1955 due to his health. Duke was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry Lee, one sister, Fern Daniels (sic) and one grandson, Tommy Lee Bise. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, JoAnn Fleharty of Hays, Kansas, Donna Lee Bise of Wichita, Kansas and Barbara Jean Ittner of Columbia, Missouri; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Carl Gourlay of Nelson and Mrs. Freeda Brown of Brewster, Kansas and one brother, William L. Eckles of Nelson. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 9, 1971 at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Nelson. Rev. Victor Schwarz officiated. Casket bearers were Paul Littrell, Jim Murphy, Henry Dillman, Chas. Larison, Clay Myers and Robert Myers. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery, Nelson. He was 93. Melvin was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Lawrence, Neb., to Fredrick William and Ella D. (Schleif) Brennfoerder. He graduated from Nelson High School, Nelson, Neb. He attended Kearney State Teachers College, Kearney, Neb., where he studied business. He retired from the United States Postal Service as a superintendent after 38 years of service. He was a member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). In the early 1980s, he came to Miami from Omaha, Neb. He had served as an Evangelistic Minister in various churches throughout his life. He was a past elder of First Christian Church in Miami, and was a member of New Hope Christian Church in Miami. On June 5, 1938, he married Ilah Mae Ruhga in Nelson. She preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 1990. He was also preceded in death by one daughter-in-law, Bonnie Brennfoerder on Nov. 27, 2005. Survivors include three sons, Gordon Brennfoerder, Dwight Brennfoerder and his wife, Diane, all of Joplin, and Lynn Brennfoerder and his wife, Mary, of Miami; one sister, Myrtle Worley, of Nelson; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami. The funeral will be Thursday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Christian Church in Miami. Ministers Leon Weece and Gary Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Abbey Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons and husbands of granddaughters, Cody Brennfoerder, Robert Brennfoerder Dodson, Brian Brennfoerder, Todd Brennfoerder, Kent Hudspeth, Mike McKinney, Jeff Johnston and Shane Brennfoerder. The family suggest memorials to First Christian Church, of Miami, or New Hope Christian Church, of Miami in memory of Mr. Brennfoerder.

Bonnie Jean Baker died on November 27, 2005 at Joplin, Jasper Co., Missouri, at age 63.4,3,1 She JOPLIN, Mo. - Bonnie Brennfoerder, age 63, of Joplin, passed away at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005, at her home following 1 year of ill health. Bonnie was born April 24, 1942, in Omaha, Neb. She had lived in Joplin since 1968. She was employed as a registered nurse with St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin for the last 20 years, working in the Emergency Room, Hospice, the CVICU unit and Radiology. She was a member of College Heights Christian Church. Bonnie married Gordon Brennfoerder June 18, 1960, in Omaha, and he survives. Additional survivors include two daughters, Ginnie Hudspeth and husband, Kent, Joplin, and Jil McKinney and husband, Mike, Texarkana, Texas; one brother, Roy Baker, Cedar Creek, Mo; two stepsisters, Carol Scott, Grayson, Ky., and Vicki Gilbert, Kokamo, Ind; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at College Heights Christian Church with Randy Gariss, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Elders of the church will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. The family has requested memorial contributions be made to the College Heights Christian Church Building Program. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary, of Joplin.
