He served in the Army from 1942-1945 in the South Pacific, and was awarded the Bronze Star. As a young man he worked locally at the clay factories, but then moved to South Bend area to work for Studebaker. He later worked as a chrome plater for Bendix, retiring in 1983. In 1986 he moved back to Brazil. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1009, the Eagles No. 291, both in Terre Haute, and the American Legion Post No. 2 and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1127 both in Brazil. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Jan Thomas of South Bend; grandchildren, Chad, Megan and Sarah Thomas; dancing partner and dear friend, Lucille Burk of Terre Haute; sisters, Ruth Armstrong and husband Tom, Mary Margaret Pickett and husband Norval, and Norma Jean Morlan; several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and four brothers, Bob Thomas, Bill Thomas, Tommy Thomas and Albert Donald Thomas. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, January 5, 2004 in French Funeral Home. Cremation will follow with burial at a later date in Clear Run Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 11:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home on Monday. on January 6, 2004.4

She was retired from Indiana State University and had formerly worked at Felix Cleaners. Maxine was born June 11, 1924 in Parke County, IN to Alva Jackson Poff and Clara Spaulding Poff. Her husband, Elmer E. Mitchell, preceded her in death in 1977. Survivors include her daughter, Regina Mitchell of Terre Haute; her granddaughter, whom she raised as a daughter, Laura Hughes and her husband, Ryan, of Terre Haute; and two grandsons, Hayden Maxwell Hughes and Griffin Christopher Hughes. Also surviving is a brother, Samuel Richard Poff and his wife, Eileen, of Terre Haute; three sisters, Mary Lansaw and Charlene Grafe both of Terre Haute and Beverly Herrington and her husband, Jim, of West Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and 5 sisters, Delores Laubert, Geneva Smith, Christine Brownfield, Martha Garwood and Rose Brandenburg. The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Maxine’s nephew, Randy Laubert, for the loving care and compassion he provided to Maxine. Private burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. on December 28, 2015.5
