Gearheart, age 79, of 3171 Garden City Blvd., S.E., passed away Saturday afternoon in a Roanoke hospital. Mr. Gearheart was a retired salesman with Roanoke City Mills. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the U.C.T. and chairman of the trustees of Garden City Baptist Church and a past deacon of the church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Josie Heath Gearheart; a daughter and son-in-law, Christine G. and Howard W. Snead, Roanoke; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Thomas G. and Suzie Snead, Callaway; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tondra S. and Douglas A. Blevins, Simpsonville, S.C; three great-grandchildren, Stacy Snead, Alex Snead, Emily Snead; sisters, Mrs. Essie G. Altice, Mrs. Ellie G. McManaway, Mrs. Ritchie G. Crews, all of Roanoke; a brother, King L. Gearheart, Timber Ridge. Interment will be in Sherwood. on April 29, 1985.1

She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Clyde Gearheart, of Rocky Mount, Va. Graveside Service and interment will be held at National Memorial Park Cemetery, Falls Church, Va. on September 16, 2010.4

Hugh L. Gearheart, an installation foreman for J.H. Pence Co., a Roanoke school equipment and supply firm, struck the right side of his face on the gymnasium floor and was dead by the time rescue units arrived, County Coroner Dr. Nat Wooding said. Gearheart had climbed to near the top of the gymnasium on structural steel supports to free a steel cable controlling the height of the baskets when he apparently slipped and fell, said Larry Clark, Halifax County Senior High School vice principal. Gearheart was not using any protective equipment at the time of the accident, and his assistant was unaware he had climbed aloft, Clark said. His body was sent to the medical examiner's office in Richmond to see if there were any medical problems that might have caused him to fall, Wooding said. A co-worker at the scene said Gearheart had a history of heart disease. Clark said a number of students were in the gym at about 9:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. on May 10, 1983.16 He Hugh Linwood Gearheart, age 60, of Route 8, Box 425 (Bandy Road), Roanoke, died Monday, May 9, 1983. He was a supervisor for the J.H. Pence Company. Mr. Gearheart was a member of the Brookhill Baptist Church; and the Mt. Pleasant Lion's Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) S. Gearheart; two sons, Walter W. Gearheart, Cantonsville, Md; Lynn H. Gearheart, Roanoke; a daughter, Miss Nancy Joyce Gearheart, Roanoke; two brothers, Homer E. Gearheart, Roanoke; Julian F. Gearheart, Ferrum; two sisters, Mrs. Oneta Williams, Chantilly, Va; Ruth Chrisman, Roanoke; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will be Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. on May 12, 1983.7

Mrs. Gearheart was a long time member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, H.C. and Mary Lee France; her husband, Julian Gearheart; daughter, Mary Lois Atkins; and grandson, Brian Atkins. Surviving are her grandson, Dean (Teresa) Atkins; her son-in-law, Elmer Atkins; and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Wesley Atkins. She is also survived by several nieces; and nephews; and her extended family caregivers of many years, Bonnie and June Harlow and Annjalete' and Warren Devan. Funeral services will be conducted from Maple Grove United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. on March 19, 2012.2

They married when he was 17 and she was 18. They later moved to North Carolina where he started his own business, installing and servicing bakery equipment. He had a great sense of humor, loved to deep sea fish and loved his family well. He was very talented at singing and playing guitar and wrote several gospel songs. He was an incredibly generous person. He and Toby were married for 43 years. He is survived by his parents, Donald and Jewel Phelps of Ludlow, KY, his wife Toby Phelps of Matthews, NC, his siblings Donald and Edie Phelps of Ludlow, KY, Mike and Jewel Cartales of Cape Coral, FL, his children Gus and Teresa Cur, Patrick and Joy Phelps, Derek and Erika Budd, all of Indian Trail, NC, and 4 grandchildren and 2 more on the way.3 He was born on September 12, 1953 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.1,2,3 He married Toby Christine Lawrence, daughter of Howard Lee Lawrence and Imogene Dennis "Jean" Allen, on April 22, 1971.1,4 Kenneth Earl Phelps died on February 12, 2015 at Matthews, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, at age 61.3
