When she departed this life, Gloria was at her home in Arnold surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving and equal partner to her husband Bobbie, and their 62-year love story was the colorful backdrop of Gloria's long and accomplished life. Gloria was born on Oct. 21, 1928 to Chris and Pauline (Hording) Detlefsen in Oconto. Gloria was a beautiful, happy child, who attended grade school in Gandy and later graduated from high school in Stapleton in May 1946. On Oct. 9, 1946. Gloria married Bobbie Smith in Broken Bow. This union produced two children, Karen, born in 1948, and Robbi, born in 1959. Karen was a lively and attractive person who greatly blessed Gloria's life in many ways before Karen lost her own battle with cancer in 1989. Karen's marriage to Duane McCan resulted in Gloria's first grandchild, Damon McCan, who is now a dentist in Eau Claire, Wisc. Gloria and Bobbie's son, Robbi, always kept her life full of fun and laughter. Robbi now farms with his dad and lives in Arnold with his wife Shelley. Their youngest son, Colbi, was often Gloria's "play buddy" both at home and around town in Arnold. Thanks to Robbi and Shelley, Gloria added three more grandkids: Jessica and Rachelle Preston of Arnold, and Jeff Preston of Broken Bow. After high school Gloria worked as secretary for Henry Dress, an attorney in Stapleton, later she worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in Arnold, including the sale barn. Gloria served as a Red Cross volunteer for 25 years, and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Arnold for 56 years. Many people will remember Gloria most for her active lifestyle-with emphasis on both LIFE and STYLE. Gloria loved golf, travel, dancing, bowling, and playing cards. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking for the couple's broad circle of friends. Gloria was particularly known for her fun-loving sense of humor and her stylish attire. Her family will always love and honor her as a dedicated, affectionate (and most of all) loving wife, mother and grandmother. Gloria was a mom who showed them how to reach far, to live fully and faithfully, and to never lose their joy and humor. This is the legacy of Gloria Detlefsen Smith. Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Pauline Detlefsen, daughter Karen Smith McCan; brothers Vern and Ray Detlefsen of North Platte; sisters Ruby (Graceton) Philpot of North Platte, and Edna (Harry) Springmeyer of California; brothers-in-law, Don Biggs of North Platte and Don Smith of Arnold.
