Stella Marie "Mariah" Kelley1,2,3,4,5

FatherPaul Grant Kelley6,1 b. February 19, 1873, d. November 25, 1919
MotherMary Katherine Fletcher6,2,1 b. February 15, 1873, d. March 5, 1928
Stella Marie "Mariah" Kelley was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.5 She was born on October 26, 1899 at Craig Co., Virginia.1,5 She married Julius A. Miller before 1923 at Virginia.7,4 As of before 1923,her married name was Miller. Stella Marie "Mariah" Kelley died on September 8, 1928 at Silver Springs, Marion Co., Florida, at age 28.4,5 She TRAGIC DEATH of MRS. MILLER in AUTO WRECK. Wife of Postal Inspector Instantly Killed When Car Strikes Tree. Losing control of a new automobile which she was just learning to drive, Mrs. Stella Marie Miller, aged 28 years, wife of Julius A. Miller, post office inspector, Sat. evening about 5:30 o'clock, veered from the road, crashed into a tree and lost her life. The accident occurred on the Daytona Highway and only a short distance from the entrance to Silver Springs. In addition to the death of Mrs. Miller, her daughter, Mary R. Miller, aged 5 yrs., suffered a fractured left collar bone, and Lucy Mae Hall, aged 16 yrs., Negro, had a broken right leg. The latter is in Munroe Memorial Hospital, whither she was taken in Undertaker Samuel Pyles' ambulance. The Miller child was treated at Munroe and released. It is believed by Sheriff S.C.M. Thomas and his deputies who investigated, that Mrs. Miller was traveling at a high rate of speed. Apparently she became frustrated when she was rounding the curve in the road at that point, but instead of applying the brakes, she stepped on the accelerator. The machine slid a short distance before climbing the curbing and then ran squarely into a pine tree. Mrs. Miller was catapulted from the car, a new Ford Roadster, purchased by her husband only 2 weeks ago. She suffered a broken neck and back, and it is said by witnesses that she lived perhaps ten minutes. She was dead when Undertaker Pyles arrived on the scene with his ambulance. Dr. R.D. Ferguson accompanied Pyles to the scene and attended the Miller girl and the Negress. Although comparative strangers in the community, the Miller tragedy occasioned wide interest and sympathy. Mr. Miller was formerly a railway mail clerk, but sometime ago was made a post office inspector, assigned to the depredation division, and was working under the direction of Joseph P. Johnson, divisional inspector in Atlanta. His territory was comprised of the states of Florida, South Carolina and Georgia. He was assigned to duty in this region in Aug. 1926 and had resided at different points. Mrs. Miller and her daughter had made several trips to their old home in Roanoke, VA, during that time. They came to Ocala exactly 2 mos. prior to her death, taking residence in Suite 8-B at the Ritz-Acker Apts. When they first came to Ocala, they were guests about 2 wks. at the Marion Hotel. While there, their child naturally became acquainted with Lucy Hall, the Negress who had been employed at the hotel as elevator operator. She became attached to the Miller child and consequently, when she had time off from work, called at the parents' home and spent her afternoons at play with little Mary. This grew into a practice, consequently, it was generally believed she was a maid employed at the home. Mrs. Miller, according to plans discussed with her husband, was to take the Hall girl home, then call for him at 4 PM at the post office. He was waiting in the Federal Building when the accident occurred, and virtually collapsed when informed of his wife's death by Undertaker Pyles. The shock was terrible and Miller's grief was pathetic. Undertaker Pyles prepared the body for burial and it was shipped at 4 PM Sunday to Roanoke where it will arrive Tuesday at 1 AM. Funeral services will take place in the chapel at Newcastle Cemetery in Roanoke and the body will be buried alongside her mother, Mrs. Mary K. Kelley, who died March 8th of this year. The body was accompanied on it's last journey by Mr. Miller and his daughter, Mary, who were escorted to the station principally by postmaster A.L. Lutus and other postal employees as well as a number of friends. Aside from her husband and daughter, Mrs. Miller is survived by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner of Logan, WV. Inspector J.P. Johnson and other department employees were notified of the tragic accident and all wired messages of condolence and indicated that Mr. Miller would be met at different stations all along the journey to Roanoke. The auto which Mrs. Miller was driving gave mute evidence of its speed and terrific impact with the tree. The front bumper described a perfect 3/4 circle. It was jammed against the radiator, which was crushed, and the engine was loosed from its moorings. Neither the windshield nor the headlights were broken. The body was thrown clear of the machine and was 25 feet away, sprawled face downward on the ground. Except for a slight scratch on the chin and skinned knees, the body was unmarked. Of more than passing interest, especially to the superstitious and skeptical, is the number 8 which tragically entwines itself about the lives of the Millers. Mr. Miller has been in the postal service for 8 years, being transferred to his inspectorship on Aug. 8, 1926. Mrs. Miller's mother died last March 8th. The family had lived in 8 different places since he took to the new work. They came to Ocala on July 8th and she lost her life on Sept. 8th. Little Mary Miller will be 5 years old on Oct. 8th, and Mrs. Miller was exactly 28 yrs. old. Mr. Miller made no plans for the future, yet it is likely that his daughter will remain for a time with her aunt, Mrs. Turner, at Logan, WV. He expects to return to Ocala in two weeks. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Miller for several years held an important post as office secretary for the R.G. Dann Co. in Roanoke. on September 10, 1928.4
