Dead are Russell Leroy Parsons of City Park Village and Joel Pennington of Hurricane. State police said that the car driven by Pennington apparently went left of center and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Kerry Tompkins, 26, of Gahanna, Ohio. The Parsons boy was a passenger in the Pennington car along with Kerry Hampton, 22, of Institute. Hampton received minor injuries as did Mrs. Karen Tompkins, 26. Both were treated and released at General Division of CAMC. The accident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday and was investigated by the Putnam County sheriff's office and state police in Winfield. Parsons was a student at Piedmont Elementary School. Surviving: mother, Mrs. Brenda Kay Lycans; sister, Aquilla Lucille Brown at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessee Lycans of Charleston. Service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Long and Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Basil Stepp officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Service and burial were held on Monday, May 24, 2004, in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney with the Rev. James A. Gunnoe officiating. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 1, at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home, Belle, with Pastor Mark Green officiating. Burial will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
