Loraine Taylor and Pastor John D. Abbott officiating. Interment will follow at Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery. He was an active volunteer with the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs in the area for most of his life. Harry was an avid gardener, hunter, fisherman and a faithful fan of the Covington Lumberjacks baseball team. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who enjoyed being with people. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyler Gene Lodge, two sisters, Mary Madeline Craft and Phyllis Paxton, one brother, Berlin Craft and a brother-in-law, Wilfred Divers. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Eunice Johnson Craft of Covington; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Ruthie Craft of Covington; his daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Gene Lodge of Covington; four grandchildren, Jonathan Craft, Benjamin Craft, Matthew Lodge and Holly Lodge, all of Covington; one sister, Opal Divers of Boones Mill; a brother-in-law, Arthur Paxton of Grottoes and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Warren officiating. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John Helmintoller, W.B. Divers, Gary Lodge, Richard Varner, Jim Birchfield, Dennie Bell, Jakie Kinsey and Clyde Selman. Alternates will be Jake Crawford, Darrell Crawford, Jim Simpson, Frank Williamson and J.D. Jones. Friends may pay their respects at any time at Arritt Funeral Home. Mr. Hypes grew up on a farm in Craig Co., where he graduated from Maywood High School. He was a 1941 graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. degree in Agriculture Engineering. He served four years in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and then served in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1980. He was employed as a Soil and Water Conservationist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in N.C. and Virginia for 40 years. He believed in conserving our soil, water, forests, wildlife, and protecting our environment for future generations. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton where he taught Sunday School, was a Superintendent of the Sunday School and served as an Elder. He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader for 21 years and received the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting. He married Carolyn Audrey Shackelford of Statesville, N.C. on November 16, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church in Statesville, N.C. They were married for 59 years and had two children. He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Audrey Shackelford Hypes; two sons, Dayton Wayne Hypes and his wife, Karen Palmer Hypes, of London Ontario, Canada, and Trenor Lee Hypes and his wife, Margaret May Hypes of N. Charleston, S.C; four grandchildren, Adrienne Grier Hypes of Grafton, W.Va., Jordan Dayton Hypes and Courtney Leigh Hypes of London Ontario, Canada, and Alexander Trenor Hypes of N. Charleston, S.C; two brothers, John William Hypes and his wife, Nancy Midyette Hypes of Harrisonburg, Va. and C.D. Hypes and his wife, Harriett Farrier Hypes, of New Castle, Va; and one sister, Jean Price Hypes Bane and her husband, William Bane, of Pearisburg, Va. A memorial service will be held 12:15 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Frederick St., Staunton, conducted by Dr. Richard S. Dietrich. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Coffee Club of Kathy's Restaurant. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2005 at Thornrose Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Watt Hypes, Webb Hypes, Roger Burleson, Bobby Dayton, Doak Bane, Rodney Williams, Alexander Hypes and Jordan Hypes. John William Hypes was buried at Port Republic Cemetery, Port Republic, Rockingham Co., Virginia.6 He was born on March 10, 1924 at Sinking Creek, Craig Co., Virginia.7,3,4,5,6 He married Nancy Cushing Midyette on April 19, 1952 at Ashland, Hanover Co., Virginia.1,2,4,6,11 John William Hypes died on November 6, 2015 at Bridgewater, Rockingham Co., Virginia, at age 91.6 He John William Hypes, 91, of Bridgewater, died Nov. 6, 2015 at the home of his son in Bridgewater. He was born March 10, 1924, in Sinking Creek, Va., and was a son of the late James Watson and Laura Trenor Hypes. John graduated from VPI after serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. John worked for the USDA, and was in beef sales at Shen-Valley Meat Packers Inc., Mick or Mack in Harrisonburg, and A.W. Whitmore and Sons in Broadway during his career. John not only took pride in his business, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and the Block and Bridle Club during his university years. John was a member of Elks Lodge No. 450 for the past 56 years. He was also an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Francis Asbury Sunday School class. John and Nancy were member of the "Valley Street community" in Harrisonburg for over 50 years where they raised their sons and established their lifelong friendships. He and Nancy were avid bridge players for many years. John was preceded in death by his brothers; Wayne M. Hypes and C.D. Hypes. On April 19, 1952 he married the former Nancy Midyette, who survives. Also surviving besides his wife of 63 years are two sons; J. Watson Hypes and his wife, Jann, of Culpeper, J. Webb Hypes and his wife, Carol, of Bridgewater; two grandchildren, Matthew D. Hypes, Ashley Hypes Poe and her husband, Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Everett Poe; sister, Jean Bane and husband, Bill; sister-in-law, Harriett F. Hypes; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The Rev. Steve Hay will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. Burial in Port Republic Mutual Cemetery will be private. on November 6, 2015.6
