Homer Edgar Reed was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.4 He was born on January 1, 1921 at Bent Mountain, Roanoke Co., Virginia.2,3,4,6,7 He married Aldene Regina Rutrough, daughter of Albert Chapel Rutrough and Bertha Alma Whitenack, on October 31, 1939 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,11 Homer Edgar Reed died on March 26, 2014 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 93.4,5 He Homer Edgar Reed passed away quietly from this life to his home in heaven on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. Born January 1, 1921 on Bent Mountain, he was a husband, father, WWII veteran, member of Lawrence Memorial Methodist Church, orchardist, farmer and avid outdoorsman. He was predeceased by his parents, Elbe M. Reed and Essie Teal Reed; and two brothers, Malvin S. Reed and Woodrow Reed. He traveled the world from Virginia to Japan while serving in the United States Navy from October 1943 to December 1946, and never again wanted to travel from his home on Bent Mountain. He built a successful business selling apples and farm products based on two principles: make sure the product was as good in the bottom of the basket as it was on top, and always give a generous measure. He believed in the principle of a "baker's dozen". In service to his community, he was one of the founding and lifetime members of the Bent Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. His favorite pastime was fishing on Philpott and Smith Mountain lakes. A "Master Angler", he received 176 citations from the State for large fish caught. The fish he cooked for family and church dinners were always the highlight of the meal. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost 75 years, Aldene Rutrough Reed; sons, Richard (Elouise), Larry (Betty), Glenn (Llena); and daughter, Robin Poff (Reggie). Also grandchildren, Daniel Reed (Vickie), Laura Reed Wright (Stacey), Tamalyn Reed Tanis (Mark), Bruno Duron, Erin Thompson Dickerson (Jacob), and Ashley Thompson Bain; also great grandchildren, Sarah Reed, Tatyana Dickerson, Jonathan Bain, Jordyn Wright, Avery Tanis, Jasmin Bain and Riley Reed Ennis. He is also survived by four sisters, Edna Oppenheim (Lewyen), Lois Overstreet, Doris Toth and Lucille Lee. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2014. Interment in the Evergreen Cemetery will be for family members only, followed by a memorial service at Oakey's South Chapel at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Rev. Terry Ross will lead the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Rescue Mission or the Bent Mountain Volunteer Fire/Rescue Squad. on March 28, 2014.4
