James Douglas Brickey On Sunday October 11, 2020, James Douglas Brickey unexpectedly went to be with our Lord and Savior. He was born on September 27, 1968, in Salem, Va. Doug graduated from Salem High School in 1986. He later deployed to the Middle East to fight in Desert Storm as a United States Marine Corps Combat Engineer. After returning home from Desert Storm, he married Rita Wheeler and became the stepfather of Taylor Arrington. Soon after, he was able to celebrate the birth of his son, Cody Brickey, and his daughter, Autumn Brickey. Doug grew up helping his father with roofing and carpentry work. Doug enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those around him whether it was taking care of his mother, working on things at his church, or doing something for his kids. He was an amazing father to Cody and Autumn, and a father-in-law to Cody’s wife, Lindsay, and Autumn’s husband, Scott. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Nolan Brickey. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Brickey; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Rita Wheeler; his step-daughter, Taylor Arrington; his daughter, Autumn Poage and her husband, Scott; his son, Cody Brickey and his wife, Lindsay; and his brother, Duffy Brickey. Crawford, Salem; sisters, Linda Faye White, Spotsylvania; Angelia Jean Wade, Roanoke; Juanita Sue Potts, Tammy Leigh Cox, both of Reidsville, N.C. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on January 16, 1990.5 He A clerk at a Roanoke convenience store was justified when he shot and killed an armed robber last week, Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell said Thursday. No charges will be filed against Everett Justice, who pulled a 9mm semiautomatic pistol tucked into the back of his pants last Friday to abort a robbery at the Pic-Quik store on Peters Creek Road Northwest. Shawn L. Crawford, 24, a Salem man with a record of burglary and larceny convictions, was killed as he leveled a small-caliber pistol at Justice. Justice pulled his weapon and fired across the cashier's counter, striking Crawford in the chest from a distance of about 3 feet. An accomplice who had been trying to get behind the cashier's counter fled the store and a suspect was arrested earlier this week. "I am satisfied that the clerk acted in a reasonable manner to protect himself from death or serious bodily injury," Caldwell said in an announcement released Thursday. Store officials have said the Peters Creek Pic-Quik has been the target of at least five armed robberies in recent months. While Caldwell's investigation did not confirm that figure, the prosecutor said he sympathizes with the risks of being a cashier at an all-night business. "It's a dangerous job to hold down these night positions," he said. However, he emphasized that Justice's vindication is not a messege to clerks that they can use deadly force in every situation that involves a possible robbery. "My advice to clerks who carry guns would be that you have to be pretty sure that it is actually a situation where you are likely to be hurt," before using a gun, Caldwell said. Charges could be filed "if it turns out that you jumped the gun," he said. Police asked Caldwell's office last week to review the case and determine if charges should be filed against Justice. Police and Caldwell have declined to identify the clerk, but the man was named in court records filed earlier this week. Authorities had said earlier that Crawford and another man, Garland Edward Clem of Southeast Roanoke, entered the store about 11 p.m. Friday. As they neared the cashier's counter, Crawford pulled a small-caliber gun as Clem, who was wearing a hunting knife on his belt, tried to get behind the cashier's counter, police said earlier. Justice fired at least twice, hitting Crawford in the left chest and then missing Clem, who circled around the store before grabbing the gun that Crawford dropped on the floor. He then fled. "I feel the clerk showed remarkable restraint in not firing further shots when [Clem] retrieved the deceased's weapon before leaving the store," Caldwell said. on January 19, 1990.7

Ellen Ward Mitchell1,2,3,4
F, b. August 27, 1950, d. February 17, 2021
Ellen Ward Mitchell was born on August 27, 1950 at Roanoke, Virginia.3,4 She married James Reginal "Reggie" Graham, son of James Earl Graham and Hazel Letitia Clower, on May 26, 1972 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,3 As of May 26, 1972,her married name was Graham.3 Ellen Ward Mitchell died on February 17, 2021 at Virginia at age 70.2 She Ellen Mitchell Graham, at a vibrant and young 70 years, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 due to Covid-19 complications. Ellen was known and loved as a devoted Christ follower, wife, mother, grandmother, and even great-grandmother. She is known as "Ellen" to most, "Mom" to a few, and Granna Ri ("Ri" pronounced "rye") to many. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Reggie Graham. She was endlessly in love with him throughout their lives together. Spending time with him on day trips and while traveling was her favorite thing to do. Her love language was definitely quality time and there was no one that she would rather spend her time with than him. She is also survived by her mother, Joyce Mitchell, and her three brothers and their spouses, Lynn and Kathy Mitchell, Jerry and Karen Mitchell, and David and Renee Mitchell. Her father, Marvin Mitchell, passed two weeks before her. Also left behind on this earth are her three children and their spouses, Kristen Gibson (and husband, Steve), Scott Graham (and wife, Amanda), and Philip Graham (and wife, Marie); as well as sixteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Ellen (Mom) was a strong, but behind the scenes, backbone of her family. She was content to let others take the spotlight. Her quiet, yet supportive demeanor was a perfect complement to Reggie's (Dad's) frequent "shenanigans"; it was in these times that her smile and laughter often became so pronounced. She was willing to do whatever it took to support her husband and our family in work and play. She was truly a silent rock and helper to Reggie. From homemaking, to his much-needed grammar help in his work documents, she was an enormous, but quiet, part of their duo, who was content to work in the background and let others take much of the credit. She was selfless and giving—the epitome of the caring nurturer of the family. Ellen loved her family and would have done anything for us. She was known for pulling her family together in holiday gatherings, and prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, the kids/grandkids enjoyed many game nights together. Whether it be Balderdash, Taboo, or Scattergories, her presence brought the family together. It is largely due to her love and hospitality for her kids that so many special family memories, and endless laughs, were made. One of her favorite things to do was travel with her husband and close friends. Many of these friendships have been dear to her heart for many, many years, she was a faithful and steadfast friend to those who were fortunate enough to know her. She strived to make her home feel like a home, she was a fabulous decorator with a country/rustic influence, and she prided herself on trying to take meticulous care of her home. She loved decorating for holidays, especially Christmas. Other enjoyable activities for her included baking, watching Hallmark movies, playing online word games with best friends, and yearly manager's meetings for her husband's employment, where she cultivated truly special friendships with other managers' wives. Above all else, she lived by her favorite verse, marked in pink highlighter in her Bible: "The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble" (Psalm 37:39). She was a longstanding member at Parkway Wesleyan Church. During those years, she served on the office staff on two separate occasions. We love you, Mom. We are heartbroken that you are not with us here, but eternally grateful that you will never know pain and sadness again. We can smile and have peace in that. on February 21, 2021.2
