James Nolan Brickey was buried at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, Pulaski Co., Virginia.1,4 He On Sunday, September 6, 2020, James Nolan Brickey died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family, due to cancer. He was born on Friday, January 21, 1938 in Roanoke, Va. In 1958, Nolan joined the United States Armed Forces. Shortly after joining, he was deployed during the Korean War. While there, he specialized in heavy artillery. After returning home to the states he became a sheet metal worker specializing in roofing. He enjoyed working at the Salem VA Medical Center in Salem, Va. and later retired from there. Nolan always put the family’s need before his own. He and Wanda spent a lot of their time caring for their grandchildren and this left a lasting impact on their lives. The most important thing that Papa would have wanted to share about his journey was how he gave his life to Jesus. He truly was a changed man. He showed the love of Christ with everything he did. The last hat he proudly wore said “I love Jesus” on it. He loved his family so much, but Wanda was truly his pride and joy. James Nolan Brickey, also known as “Papa,” will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. We are thankful for the time we had with him here on Earth, and we look forward to seeing him again. Nolan was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Roop; and his father, Richard Brickey. His surviving family includes his wife of 62 years, Wanda Brickey; his two sons, Duffy Brickey and James Brickey; his grandson, Cody Brickey and his wife, Lindsay, and his granddaughter, Autumn Poage and her husband, Scott. Please join us tat the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery. The US Army will render military funeral honors.1 He was born on January 21, 1938 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,4 He married Wanda Lee Clower, daughter of Orville Lee Clower and Inez Gaye Willis, on July 8, 1958 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.5,6,7,8,3 James Nolan Brickey died on September 6, 2020 at Virginia at age 82.1,4

(Larry) Crawford, age 24, of Salem, died January 12, 1990. He is survived by his parents, Carl L. and Phyllis Crawford, Salem; brothers, Willie H. Edmonds, III, Michael Dwyane Byrd, both of Roanoke; Kevin L. Crawford, Salem; sisters, Linda Faye White, Spotsylvania; Angelia Jean Wade, Roanoke; Juanita Sue Potts, Tammy Leigh Cox, both of Reidsville, N.C. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on January 16, 1990.5 He A clerk at a Roanoke convenience store was justified when he shot and killed an armed robber last week, Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell said Thursday. No charges will be filed against Everett Justice, who pulled a 9mm semiautomatic pistol tucked into the back of his pants last Friday to abort a robbery at the Pic-Quik store on Peters Creek Road Northwest. Shawn L. Crawford, 24, a Salem man with a record of burglary and larceny convictions, was killed as he leveled a small-caliber pistol at Justice. Justice pulled his weapon and fired across the cashier's counter, striking Crawford in the chest from a distance of about 3 feet. An accomplice who had been trying to get behind the cashier's counter fled the store and a suspect was arrested earlier this week. "I am satisfied that the clerk acted in a reasonable manner to protect himself from death or serious bodily injury," Caldwell said in an announcement released Thursday. Store officials have said the Peters Creek Pic-Quik has been the target of at least five armed robberies in recent months. While Caldwell's investigation did not confirm that figure, the prosecutor said he sympathizes with the risks of being a cashier at an all-night business. "It's a dangerous job to hold down these night positions," he said. However, he emphasized that Justice's vindication is not a messege to clerks that they can use deadly force in every situation that involves a possible robbery. "My advice to clerks who carry guns would be that you have to be pretty sure that it is actually a situation where you are likely to be hurt," before using a gun, Caldwell said. Charges could be filed "if it turns out that you jumped the gun," he said. Police asked Caldwell's office last week to review the case and determine if charges should be filed against Justice. Police and Caldwell have declined to identify the clerk, but the man was named in court records filed earlier this week. Authorities had said earlier that Crawford and another man, Garland Edward Clem of Southeast Roanoke, entered the store about 11 p.m. Friday. As they neared the cashier's counter, Crawford pulled a small-caliber gun as Clem, who was wearing a hunting knife on his belt, tried to get behind the cashier's counter, police said earlier. Justice fired at least twice, hitting Crawford in the left chest and then missing Clem, who circled around the store before grabbing the gun that Crawford dropped on the floor. He then fled. "I feel the clerk showed remarkable restraint in not firing further shots when [Clem] retrieved the deceased's weapon before leaving the store," Caldwell said. on January 19, 1990.7
