His Social Security Number was 228-20-6762.10 Benny Wade Muncy was born on April 14, 1927 at Draper, Rockingham Co., North Carolina.7,10,5 He married Martha Corinne "Cookie" Cook on November 15, 1949 at Pasquotank Co., North Carolina.7,2,3,4 Benny Wade Muncy died on April 3, 2008 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 80.10,3,6 He Benny Muncy, longtime mayor of Dendron, dies. Eighty-year-old Benny Wade Muncy was mayor extraordinaire of Dendron and the volunteer keeper of the Surry County town's water system. The owner for 25 years of Ben's Garage in town, "he could do anything he put his mind to - welding, pipe work, plumbing, concrete, carpentry," said his son, Wade Sims Muncy of Dendron. When Mr. Muncy became a Town Council member, the Dendron water system didn't extend throughout the town. "He got it extended so that every home could have water and made sure the system was adequate to take on new construction in town," his son said. Mr. Muncy took care of the system and would go there any time, day or night, if there was a problem. He would change out the water meters and install meters. He did all the maintenance. During Hurricane Isabel in 2003, the town did not lose its water supply because he was keeping vigil at the town pump house for a week or more, his son said. He also helped carry meals from the fire station to victims of the storm and took portable generators around town to help residents save the food in their refrigerators and freezers. Mr. Muncy was instrumental in lobbying to extend the county sewer to Dendron and when the line was extended last year, he personally assisted many residents with their hookups, his son said. "He loved serving the public and tried to be fair to everybody. His heart's desire was to see Dendron prosper again - for business to come there again and for people to want to stay there," his son said. Elected to Town Council not long after he moved to Dendron in the early 1970s, Mr. Muncy had been mayor for 28 years when he died of brain cancer Thursday in a Richmond hospital. Besides continually trying to upgrade the water system, Mr. Muncy was instrumental in securing grant money for a housing rehabilitation program in Dendron to help low- to middle-income people upgrade their homes to code. In 2006 and 2007, he also helped design and build the Dendron Depot Museum, a reproduction of a typical small-town railroad depot that is the home of the Dendron Historical Society, said Nancy Faison Threewitts-Hughes, a society member. He was an active member of the society. A Draper, N.C., native, Mr. Muncy lived in Newcastle, Del., and worked for DuPont Co. for a time. He opened Ben's Sandwich Shop in Dendron in 1972. In his spare time, he fished and played the steel guitar and dobro and sang with a band. During World War II, he served as an Army supply sergeant in the European theater. His wife of 57 years, Corinne Cook Muncy died March 3, 2007. In addition to a son, survivors include a grandson. Plans for a celebration of the Muncys' lives are incomplete. on April 5, 2008.3
