Born Oct. 22, 1925 in Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late Alex Akers and Sarah Hylton Akers. Mr. Akers had been a resident of the Princeton area all of his life. He was retired from the Mercer County Board of Education having served for several years as custodian at Princeton Senior High School. Working on tractors was the love of his life. Mr. Akers was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Reece, Joe and Jim and one sister, Carrie. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hodges Akers of the home; two daughters, Gracie Elizabeth Neal and husband Albert and Ruby Ernestine Stump and husband David all of Princeton; two sons, Bennie Jackson Akers and wife Darless of Princeton and William Elden Akers and wife Pam of Bluefield; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a special friend, his dog Heidi. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. today at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Bailey officiating. She was born February 5, 1931, the youngest of six children born to Albert R. Belcher and Carmen Spence Belcher. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her brothers, Charles, Richard, Jack and Albert Jr. and her infant sister, Mable all preceded her. She was fifteen years old at the end of World War II when she married the love of her life, Joseph I. Hodges. They were blessed with sixty-five years of marriage, and gave life to four children, Barbara and husband Larry King of Sandlick, Brenda and husband Kenneth Johnston of Princeton, and Joseph E. Hodges and wife Betty of Princeton; their infant son, Eldon Ray preceded her to heaven. She cherished her nine grandchildren, Kristie and Chip Musick, Tracie and Anthony Parker, Kelly and Scottie Gordon, Immanuel and Buffy King, Kimberly and Jonathan Hendricks, Lisa and Randall Black, Brittany Hodges, Nancy Hodges and David Hodges; and adored her loving 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A quiet, humble person, she was an amazing woman who modeled the Proverbs 31: Lady, caring for her home, her family and her husband and their family. She cared for her Joe with compassion and love through many years of illness and sacrifice. She was quick to laugh and loved to sing and read. Her family has rich stores of beautiful memories to ease their great loss. She will be missed more than words can tell. Services to celebrate the life of Minnie Hodges will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 15, 2011 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Randall Black and Pastor Casper Dalton officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. on August 13, 2011.3

Her husband of 56 years, William Wesley Meeteer; brothers Edwin Eugene, Robert Thornton, and Richard Hight Johnson; and sister-in-law, Vida Bardsley, also preceded her in death. Bette was a graduate of Waynesboro High School, class of 1946, and the Realtors Institute. In the community she was a member of the BPW, the Hoe & Hope Garden Club, assistant director of the Waynesboro-East Augusta Chamber of Commerce, and a realtor for 20 years. She moved to Waynesboro in 1934 and lived most of her life in the tree streets. A member of First Presbyterian Church for 68 years, she served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the Women of the Church, and as a Deacon on the Diaconate. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, needle work, and her grandies. She loved and lived her life for her large family. Bette loved to travel, including Nova Scotia, Canada, the British Isles, Europe by train, and summer vacations on the Outer Banks. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Kathleen Meeteer Doyle (Arnold B., Jr.) of Stuarts Draft, Wesley R. Meeteer (Alice) of Pipestem, WV. And Waynesboro, Cynthia Meeteer Doyle (Rodger) of Waynesboro, Laura Meeteer Atkins (William) of Waynesboro, and William Simpson Meeteer of Pipestem, WV; grandchildren, Blair Doyle (Amy), Brian Doyle (Aaron), Benjamin Doyle (Rachel), Kara Meeteer Trail (Ken), Dr. Wesley R. Meeteer II (Jennifer), Kameron Meeteer Yee (Paul), Joel Doyle (Denise), Daniel Doyle (Rachel), Kimberley Atkins Prendergast (Barry), Cynthia Atkins, Michael Atkins II, and Afton Meeteer Milks; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Wink, Virginia, and Alice Carol; and special friends Cheryl and Neil Smilth, Jean Toms, Cory Hartbarger, and Wanda Purcell. She is survived by two daughters, Carla Ray of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Cathy Brown of Eufaula, Okla; a son William Craig McCaleb of Trenton, N.J; grandchildren, Brandon and John T. Ray of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Katy and Amy Brown of Edmond, Okla. on November 17, 2015.3
