Shirley Arthur McClure After 87 and ½ years, Shirley Arthur McClure moved on to greener pastures on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD, after a brief illness. Shirley was born to Charles Ralph and Willa Gilchrist McClure on November 5, 1923, on a ranch west of Hot Springs, SD. His childhood was spent on the family ranch close to where Cascade Creek enters the Cheyenne River. He attended a small country school on Cascade Road and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1941. Shortly after graduating he moved to his maternal grandparents ranch in Minnekahta Valley where he lived the rest of his life. On October 8, 1945 he married a young school teacher, Enid Lucille Elston, and together they raised three loving sons, Duane, Randall and Gary. Shirley spent many years working for Fall River County Highway Department blading roads, Hills Materials and later he worked for the State of South Dakota Highway Department. However, his real passion was ranching. He loved watching the new calves in the spring and sitting in the dusty sale barns watching them sell in the fall and talking with acquaintances. Shirley never met a stranger!
