Mr. Haynes was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1984 as Director of Transportation from Norfolk Southern Corporation with 40 years of service. Prior to that he served as Superintendent of Transportation in Bellevue, Ohio; Decatur, Ill; and St. Louis Mo. He was a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church having served as a deacon and on various committees. He was a past president of the Mended Hearts Chapter 144, served on the board of the American Heart Association of the Roanoke Valley and also served on the commission to build the Decatur Civic Center, Decatur, Ill. The funeral will be held at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church on Friday, August 18, 2006 at 10 a.m. with Dr. Tom Stocks officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Oakeys South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church, 2711 Laburnum Ave, SW Roanoke, Va. 24015. A spirited soul, Anne was born on May 3, 1926, to the late Bill and Ida Stanley Conner. The third of seven children, Anne grew up in Roanoke, graduating from William Byrd High School. She retired from Sears Roebuck and was active in many organizations including the Eastern Star, Christian Women’s Club, Garden Club, Roanoke Credit Women’s Association, and the Red Hat Society. Following retirement, she enjoyed assisting customers at Fink’s Jewelers. Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles B. Thacker; son, C. Michael Thacker; brothers, Alvin, Bobby and Billy Conner; and sister, Pauline Main. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Pamela T. (Frank) Peck of Roanoke; son, Douglas B. (Noni) Thacker of Winter Park, Fla; daughter-in-law, Victoria Thacker of Roanoke; sister, Teenie Funk of Roanoke; brother, Galen (Laura) Conner of Vinton; and sister-in-law, Becky Conner of Vinton. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Wensday (Michael) Tumulak of Roanoke, Jeffrey (Tonya) Ursoy of Frederick, Colo., Alexandra Thacker of Roanoke, Jillian “JJ” Thacker and Douglas “Budd” Thacker both of Sanford, Fla., and Charles Thacker of Huntersville, N.C; stepgrandchildren, Matthew Peck and Maureen (Jason) Green of Roanoke; and her great-grandchildren, Callen and Delaney Tumulak, Savannah and Caden Ursoy, Noah Peck and Addisen Green. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. Anne was known by family and friends as always representing the fiery side of our family, with her red hair and fabulously matching outfits. She loved football and the family alumni schools of Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute, where her sons played, were her favorites. Anne was an excellent cook and enjoyed celebrating every family occasion by preparing a delicious meal. Egg hunts in the backyard were a highlight of the Easter celebration. An animal lover, Anne was rarely without the companionship of a pet dog or cat. For many years she and her husband enjoyed dressing in formal attire for parties and dances at the Kazim Temple, Moose Lodge, and other social events. She loved to be outdoors and could often be found working in her yard and flower beds. Both Anne and her husband enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets and decorating their home with their many purchases. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Oakey’s South Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to the staff at Richfield’s Joseph C. Thomas Center.      William Alvin Fletcher "Bill" Conner Jr. was born on March 21, 1928 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.2 He married Regina Unknown circa 1950.2 William Alvin Fletcher "Bill" Conner Jr. died on March 21, 2007 at North Carolina at age 79.2 He William Alvin Fletcher Conner, Jr. (Bill), of Raleigh, N.C., passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2007. He lived to be 79. Bill was born March 21, 1928 in Roanoke County, Virginia, the fourth child to William A.F. Conner and Ida Stanley. Bill was a graduate of William Byrd High School, where he was a star athlete participating in baseball, track and football. He continued his education at Duke University, graduating in 1955. While attending Duke on a football scholarship, he was a member of the 1954 Orange Bowl team. After graduation, Bill and Regina made their home in Raleigh. Upon settling, he started the Bill Conner Insurance Agency, specializing in life, health and group insurance. Bill held a keen interest in the community by being a charter member of North Hills Club, as an avid tennis player. He was a member of the Optimist Club, the Sports Club and the Lions Club. He also served as devoted coach to the Pepsi sponsored Little League football team for many years. After retirement, he developed many hobbies in the arts, showing his talent for carving, painting and drawing. Bill also continued his enthusiasm for sports by playing golf and supporting his grandchildren's activities. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William A.F. Conner and Ida Stanley; brothers, Alvin and Bobby; and sister, Pauline Main. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, and wife of 57 years, Regina; daughter, Andrea and husband Tony Page, their daughter, Amanda and her husband Reid Halva; daughter, Melanie Conner Campbell and husband Dan Campbell and his children Daniel and Eryn; daughter, K-Dee and husband Chris Leith, their children Caitlin and Conner. Bill is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Annie Thacker, "Tennie" Funk and Galen Conner of Roanoke. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Six Forks Road officiated by Dr. G. Jeffery Roberts. A visitation for friends and family will be held one hour before the service at the Church. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the staff of Wake EMS Three, Wake Med 6th Floor staff, the Wake Med Critical Care staff and Dr. Jeff Roberts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27609. on March 23, 2007.2
