Roswell Skinner was buried at Cooke Memorial Cemetery, Liberty, Liberty Co., Texas.5 He was born on February 1, 1807 at Nelson Co., Virginia.2 He married Theodosia Dica Dever on June 5, 1828 at Washington Co., Kentucky.4,3 Roswell Skinner died on October 18, 1897 at Liberty, Liberty Co., Texas, at age 90.2 He Last Monday morning, at 7 o'clock, Mr. Roswell Skinner died at the residence of his son-in-law, A. J. Beard, in this place, after an illness of only a few days. The deceased was perhaps the oldest white citizen of our county. He was nearly 91 years old, having been born on Feb. 1, 1807, in Nelson County, Virginia. When about grown his father died, and soon thereafter, under the care of his mother, moved to Kentucky. Leaving Kentucky in 1849, the deceased with his wife and five children came to Texas and settled in Liberty county. Three of his children survive him: Mr. J. D. Skinner of Galveston, Mrs. W. R. Swinney and J. F. Skinner of Lampasas. He was of a genial disposition, and although an invalid for the past twelve years, as the result of an accident by being thrown from a horse; he was always of a happy frame of mind. He had enjoyed excellent health until the last illness, which at first was not considered serious. The writer had known the deceased for forty years - claimed an intimate friendship with him - and can testify to his sterling integrity, honesty of purpose and sincere friendship. He was loved and respected by all who ever knew him. He was never heard to utter an unkind word, or speak evil to anyone In early life he professed religion and united with the Methodist church, and during all those years he was recognized as a true, consistent, zealous member of that church. "Grandpa" Skinner's life was a beautiful life - a grand heritage to his children and to his friends. But he is gone! "Redeemed from earth and pain, Ah' when shall we ascend, And all in Jesus' presence reign With our translated friend?" Tuesday morning services were held over the body by Rev. O. A. Shook, pastor of the M. E. church, who, after the usual ritual ceremony, spoke in feeling and appropriate terms of the life of the venerable citizen whose days with us are now ended. The remains were buried at the old Griffin-Skinner graveyard, the funeral cortege being one of the largest ever seen here. on October 22, 1897.2
