"It took many years for me to prove that John W. Gray and Edley Gray were brothers, sons of Edward Howard Gray, Jr., and not children of Joseph Howard Gray, Sr. To do this I had to prove that thre children of Joseph; William, Edward and Elizabeth Gray (Harris) moved to Blue Springs, Jackson Co., Missouri.

What will I need to do in order to prove that Mary Gray who married James Poff in 1837 is not a daughter of Joseph Howard Gray, Sr.? Many researchers simply claim Mary to be a daughter of Joseph Howard Gray, Sr. for two reasons: 1) that there is a daughter named Mary on Joseph Howard Gray, Sr.'s will, and 2) that Edward Gray (son of Joseph, or brother of Mary) signed her marriage certificate.

Let's rule out #2. I claim the same statement, that Edward Gray signed her marriage certificate, but state it is not her brother, Edward, but her father Edward. (Edward Howard Gray, Jr.) My claim actually makes more since than her brother due to the fact that her father was still alive at the time, and her brother had left Virginia, moving to Missouri.

Let's rule out #1. Just think how many Gray's could list a Mary on their wills.

Let's look at the only facts we have, besides a name listed on a will:

As I stated Mary's father was still alive when she married James Poff. This could have been Joseph Howard Gray, Sr., or his brother Edward Howard Gray, Jr. They were both still alive when Mary married in 1837.

Could Mary's brother, Edward Gray, have signed her marriage certificate. Highly unlikely since he, his brother William Gray, and his sister Elizabeth (Gray) Harris, were all living in Blue Springs, Jackson Co., Missouri, shortly after Elizabeth Gray was married to Reuben Harris, 1832.

Mary married James Poff five years after her brother Edward had moved with his family to Missouri.

Unless someone can supply more substantial information on the father of Mary I propse her to be a daughter of Edward and not Joseph. Realize that my facts are lacking, but believe the known information of dates and where people moved and lived at the time of Mary's marriage and the signature on her marriage certificate is a strong indication of who her father actually was.⁴ She was born on January 27, 1814 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.³ She married James Isaac Poff, son of Henry Adam Poff Sr. and Sarah Prillaman "Sally" Sowder, on January 19, 1837 at Franklin Co., Virginia.^2,6 As of January 19, 1837,her married name was Poff. Mary Ann "Polly" Gray died on February 3, 1853 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 39.³

Mrs. Woods was a longtime and devoted member of New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence T. and Hazel Woods, of Roanoke, Edward L. and Betty Woods, of Rocky Mount, and Randall W. and Lois Woods, of LaGrange, Ky; seven beloved grandchildren, Michael Woods and wife, Susan, Clarence Woods Jr., Robin Bowen and husband, Larry, Daniel Woods and wife, Gwen, Anthony Woods and wife, Becky, Keith Woods and wife, Tracey and Christina and husband, Bob; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March, 28, 2008, at New Life Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Rev. Daniel G. Woods will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237. on March 26, 2008.⁶
