A native of Roanoke, he was the son of the late Bonnie Waldo and Mary Raines Elmore. He was a 1934 graduate of Jefferson High School and in 1959 earned a Bachelors degree in Military Science from the University of Maryland. He was employed in retail sales until his enlistment in the Army during World War II. He did enlisted service with the 116th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division. He commissioned in the Quartermaster Corps. In 1942 serving in logistics assignments in Richmond, and Washington, D.C. Upon completion of military service, he was employed with the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. until recalled to active Army duty during the Korean War, serving on the Army General Staff, The Pentagon. He later held civilian assignments in Headquarters, Department of the Army, and the Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Defense, retiring in 1973 with the rank of Colonel. He was a life member of the Retired Officers Association, and the Reserve Officers Association, a Perpetual Member, The Military Order of the World Wars, a member of the 29th Division Association, Post 3 of the American Legion, and Lodge 197, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Norman also served on the Board of Directors of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation and was an Affiliated member of the 116th Infantry Regiment, "The Stonewall Brigade". In ceremonies at Fort Lee in July 1994 he was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Regiment. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Jeannine Bousman and Mary Jane Overstreet. He was a long time member of Northview United Methodist Church, and more recently, a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Lucille W. Elmore; brother, Roger S. Elmore and wife Leah of Roanoke; sister, Annah Lee Crawford and a brother-in-law, Sherwood B. Bousman, both of Roanoke; children, Stephen W. Cottrell and wife Sharon of Troutville, Sharon Cottrell of Lynchburg, Deborah Woods and husband Richard of Roanoke; grandchildren, Kendra and Kameron Cottrell, Jennifer, Jessica and Jordyn Woods. Interment with military honors will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on September 25, 2004.3

     Roger Sherwood Elmore was born on December 19, 1927 at Roanoke, Virginia.5,7 He married Leah Hester Rexrode on August 16, 1952 at Charlottesville, Virginia.5,6,11 Roger Sherwood Elmore died on July 30, 2015 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 87.5 He Roger Sherwood Elmore passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 30, 2015, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on December 19, 1927, in Roanoke, Va., where he lived most of his life. After graduation from Jefferson High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. While attending Roanoke College, he was called to active duty during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Navy, he married Leah Rexrode, and moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he continued his studies at the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he was employed for the next 33 years in the Business Sales Department of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where he became a distinguished member of the company's Hall of Fame, the department's highest recognition. He retired as manager of the Roanoke office in 1987. A life-long Presbyterian, he served the Lord faithfully as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and choir member in Roanoke as well as Marco Island, Fla. Well known for his beautiful tenor voice, he is most remembered for two of his favorites, "Seek Ye the Lord" and "He Touched Me." In addition, he was active in Sertoma Club, Habitat for Humanity, Gideons International, Lay Renewal, and Crossroads Bible Institute. He was honored to have been appointed to serve as Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church US, the church's highest court. His later years were spent worshipping at Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Roanoke where he was a charter member. As long as his health allowed, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially cruising, but he thoroughly enjoyed boats of all sizes. Until the onset of Parkinson's Disease, he enjoyed sailing and was an active participant in the racing program at the Virginia Inland Sailing Association (VISA) on Smith Mountain Lake where he learned to sail. He sailed in the Chesapeake Bay, Santiago Bay, West Indies, the Intracoastal Waterway from New Bern, N.C., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and participated in overnight races from Marco Island, Fla., to Key West and the Dry Tortugas. He especially enjoyed a two-week bareboat cruise in the Grenadine Islands. In addition to his membership at VISA, he was a member of the Sailing Association of Marco Island, Fla. A former trumpeter and lifelong lover of jazz, he thoroughly enjoyed a fabulous impromptu backyard concert by the Brass 5 given in his honor on March 15, 2015. Family, friends, and neighbors gathered to greet him and enjoy the very special time. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie W. Elmore and Mary Raines Elmore; a brother, Col. Norman E. Elmore; sisters, Annah Lee Clingenpeel Crawford, Mary Jane Overstreet and Jeannine Bousman; daughter, Lisa Elmore Cox; and son-in-law, Edward A. Natt. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Leah R. Elmore; daughter, Claire Natt; son-in-law, Richard K. Cox, all of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Lucille Elmore of Roanoke, and Mary C. Rexrode, of Harrisonburg, Va; brother-in-law, Warren Rexrode and wife, Arvella, of Sugar Grove, W.Va; grandchildren, Robert Natt and wife, Angela, of Roanoke, Allen Natt of Washington, D.C., and Lindsey Pearson and husband, Adam, of Harrisonburg, Va; three great-grandsons, Eli John and Brooks Kendall Pearson, Samuel Augustine Natt; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family gratefully acknowledges the excellent care and loving support from Generations Solutions and Gentle Shepherd Hospice. on August 2, 2015.5
