George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff George Gottlieb Pfaff (Poff)
The Clausthal Parish Register indicates that Gottlieb's father Zacharias died in 1747. It is unknown if his Mother was still alive or if any of his siblings were still living. According to Jen Mueller-Joppe, several of his siblings may have died very early in life and George may have been one of a few surviving children.

According to the late historian Klaus Wust, there were a large contingent of convicts (41) on the Queen of Denmark from the Hamburg workhouse and jails that were deported by order of the Hamburg Senate (city government). In the Hannover State Archives, Fach 154, Nr. 2, it was noted that George Gottlieb was a "Semmeljunge" (spoiled child), was delivered to the English ship Queen of Denmark July 25, 1752 for the destination of South Carolina from Hamburg. Maybe George was an orphan in Clausthal and considered to be economically undesirable in Clausthal and Hamburg. When Jen reviewed the listing of the passengers on the Queen, many were from Clausthal, had been employed in the mining profession and had chose to emigrate rather than be deported and put on the ship by the local authorities. When I reviewed the listing of the passengers most of the people were in their twenties.

The town of Clausthal is now referred to as the municipality of Clausthal-Zellerfield which is part of the Oberharz Municipal Association, in the District of Gostar, State of Lower Saxony, the country of Republic of Germany.3 He was born circa 1734 at Clausthal, Hannover Territory, Lower Saxony, Germany.4 He immigrated on November 3, 1752 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sailed from Hamburg on the English ship "Queen of Denmark."4 He married Esther Margaretha Unknown before 1760.4 George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff married Catharina Margaretha Griesbach on December 31, 1760 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.2,4 George Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff Renting 7 acres and paid a tax of 2 shillings in 1769 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.4 He began military service in 1777 Godlip Poff, Private 5th Class, Fourth Company, 10th Batallion of Lancaster County Militia, commanded by Colonel David Jenkins.4 He Paid a tax of 3 pounds 10 shillings on August 20, 1777 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.4 He Paid a tax of 6 in 1780 at Earl Township, New Holland, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. M, b. March 1, 1886, d. July 11, 1927
Gustavus James "Gus" Simmons Gustavus James Simmons - Prohibition Officer Gus Simmons was shot and killed from ambush as he and three other state prohibition officers searched for a still in along the Jenny Branch of the Little White Oak Creek in Wyoming County. As the raiding party made its way toward the still Officer Simmons was shot in the back from ambush. The shooters were able to flee the scene as the other officers sought cover and retreated to call for assistance. Several members of one family were arrested and charged with his murder. Two were convicted and sentenced to life, while three others were acquitted. Officer Simmons had given up a life of farming to become a prohibition officer after his son was given illegal liquor by moonshiners.4 He was buried at Blue Jay Cemetery, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.3 He was born on March 1, 1886 at Marie, Summers Co., West Virginia.1 He married Martha Ann Light, daughter of James Light and Sarah Olive Clower, on April 8, 1914 at Summers Co., West Virginia.5 Gustavus James "Gus" Simmons died on July 11, 1927 at Pineville, Wyoming Co., West Virginia, at age 41; Shot to death in a homicide.2 He Gus Simmons was 41 years of age and was born and raised in Summers county in the Jumping Branch district where he resided most of his life, leaving there a few years ago, and at the time of his death he was living in Beckley. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Simmons and followed the occupation of farming before entering the prohibition service several years ago. He is survived by hts wife and five children, of Beckley, his mother, Mrs. Mary M. Simmons of this city, and six sisters; Mrs. J. T. Watts of Bluefleid; Mrs. Luther Vest and Mrs. Carrie Lowe, of Jumping Branch; Mrs. B. M. Dobbin and Mrs. E. M. Atkins of Glen Hedrick, and Mrs. H. F. Watts, of Hinton. No funeral arrangements had been made at noon today, but relatives said he would probably be buried at Glen Hedrick beside his father, who died a few months ago. A resident of this city, who knew Simmons intimately said that Simmons had told him the story on more than one occasion of how he cams to take up the prohibition enforcement work. According to the story told by Simmons, moonshiners around Jumping Branch, were taking his oldest son out with them and on several occasions got him drunk. They were warned by Simmons to not bother his boy, but they seemed to pay no attention to him and he joined the prohibition forces in order to combat the moonshiners, and to get revenge on them. on July 12, 1927.6
