Norris was active in the Salem community serving as Scoutmaster for local Boy Scout Troops and Cub Scout Packs. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their RV, which led them to join the Holiday Ramblers – an RV camping club. When his country called upon his duty, Norris served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Westside Church of Christ. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Velda Gearhart; sons, Michael “Mike” Gearhart and wife, Daphne, and Timothy “Tim” Gearhart; grandchildren, Laura Brunk and husband, Daniel, Ashley Emmond and husband, Jake, Thomas Gearhart, Chad Gearhart, and Elizabeth Gearhart; great-grandchildren, Devan, Caleb, and Kendra Brunk, Autumn Emmond, and Aiden Gearhart; sister, Rhonda Thurman and husband, Larry; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. She was born on Thursday, December 3, 1936, to the late Irvan James and Lavina Mae Gill Rutledge. Velda was a switchboard operator and retired from Bell Atlantic after many years. She was an active member of West Side Church of Christ and enjoyed serving at Virginia church camp. She and her husband enjoyed traveling in their RV, which led them to join the Holiday Ramblers – an RV camping club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norris Glovern Gearhart; and many siblings. Audrey Arbell Carr died on June 20, 1992 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 85.4,5 She Audrey Carr Harris, age 85, died Saturday, June 20, 1992, in a local hospital. She was a retired electrologist, and was a life-long resident of Roanoke, but had made her home in Bedford for the past twenty months with her daughter, Dolores. She was the widow of Claude Harris, and is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marcheta and Delbert Ferguson, Murlene Williams, all of Roanoke; Dolores and Tom Ayres, Bedford; an adopted grandson, Tony Williams, Salem; a stepdaughter, Margaret H. Johnson, Myrtle Beach, S.C; two stepsons and their wives, Charles and Dorothy Harris, Columbia, S.C; James and Melita Harris, Camden, S.C; a stepdaughter-in-law, Jean Harris, Norfolk; three sisters and their husbands, Vergie and Bob Headley, Danville; Addie McCall, Ruby and Red English, all of Roanoke; a brother and his wife, Roy and Cassie Carr, Roanoke; a granddaughter, Marie W. Lee; five grandsons, Steve and David Ferguson, Ronnie Williams, Rick and Travis Moran; two stepgrandsons, Jeffrey and Charles Harris; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel Tuesday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Robert M. Hamner and the Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's South Chapel. on June 22, 1992.5
