His wife, Mary Jane Muncy Poff, 68, was beaten to death Thursday about noon with a hammer. Poff was in Lewis-Gale Hospital in Roanoke prior to being transferred to Staunton. He was in satisfactory condition before his transfer with wounds on the head, neck and wrist. Police said that Poff attempted to take his own life. Besides her husband, Mrs. Poff is survived by her father, James W. Muncy, Montgomery County; one daughter, Mrs. Emory Haga, Roanoke; one stepson, Bernard Poff, Toledo, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. A. R. Wilkerson, Salem. Burial will be at Sherwood. on September 19, 1964.5

She was an active member of Fruitport Congregational United Church of Christ and the Fruitport Lady Lions. Clarissa enjoyed her gardening, bowling, golfing, world traveling and was a great cook. But foremost was always her family. Survivors include her daughter, Clarajane "CJ" Middlecamp of Fruitport; grandchildren, Alyson Middlecamp of Sparta, Seth (Kim Jonkers) Middlecamp of Fruitport, Lisa (David) Middlecamp-Lowder of North Muskegon and Wendolyn (Brian) Thomas of Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Seth Jr., Destiny, Zoey, Meghan and Natali; and great-great-granddaughter, Anne Adele. Interment at Fruitport Cemetery. on October 27, 2011.5

He had been ill only a few hours and death apparently followed a heart attack. Mr. Phillips was born in South Bend and came to Mishawaka 40 years ago from that city. He joined the Mishawaka Fire. Dept., in 1920 and was retired in 1955. He married Gladys Ameigh in St. Joseph, Mich., Dec. 1, 1920. Surviving are his widow; one son, Cloyd D. Phillips Jr., at home; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Le Mon, of Mishawaka, and Mrs. Louis Paszli, of South Bend; six grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford, Clarence and Kenneth Phillips, all of Mishawaka, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Rogers, of Juno Lake, Edwardsburg, Mich. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Phillips was a member of the First Church of God and the Indiana Firemen's Assn. Pallbearers will be Larry Deal, Charles Fisher, Vene Ferrell, George Dentino and Richard and Forrest Good. on January 23, 1962.11
