James Hearn died on January 16, 1913 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 73.11,6 He Hon. James Hearn, one of the best known citizens of Mercer county, died at his home at Princeton, the county seat, last Thursday at the advanced age of 74 years. Mr. Hearn is survived by a wife, two sons and two daughters, four brothers and two sisters. Mr. Hearn served in the war between the states in the company of Capt Little. West Virginia troops, and was in the same command with Lieutenant McKinley and Colonel Hayes, of Ohio, each of whom afterwards became president. He would never accept a pension, being one of the few who took that view of the matter. After the war he engaged in farming and merchandising, and later became a contractor on road construction, and built a section of the Virginian railroad in this county. He purchased a tract of land adjoining Princeton, and laid it out into building lots and was engeged in selling them when stricken by his last illness. He always took an interest in public affairs, and was for years one of the leaders in the Republican party in that county and section. He twice represented Mercer county in the legislature. on January 17, 1913.6
