He was active in all areas of the church, but was especially known as a teacher of Sunday School and Bible Study groups for over 65 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Vivian Hitchcock McAvoy and five sisters. He is survived by his wife, Effie Radford Conner McAvoy of Roanoke; a son and daughter-in-law, Rev. James O. and Nancy McAvoy of Live Oak, California; grandsons and wives, James and Karen McAvoy, Tuscon, Arizona, John and Donna McAvoy, Live Oak, California; three great-grandsons, Jeffrey, Gregory, Jeremy McAvoy, Live Oak, California; three stepsons and wives, William B. and Sally Conner, Kennett Square, Penn., Glenn H. and Lynn Conner, Suffolk, Roy C., Jr. and Vickie Conner, Jacksonville Beach, Fla; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 14, 1996 at 9:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Church of the Brethren, Boones Mill, with the Rev. Keith Simmons and the Rev. J. Willard Bowman officiating. There will be a graveside service at Pleasant View Cemetery, Fayetteville, W.Va., Friday, June 14, 1996 at 3:30 p.m. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Born in Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert B. Spangler and Barbara Spence Spangler. Mrs. Shockey was a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church, Women's Christian Temperance Union, Order of Eastern Star, Fayetteville Homemakers Club, Minta Warren Bible Class, and was a retired Fayette County school employee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Madison Spangler (Scott Schaffer notes this is obviously an error - should be Shockey) ; a son, Jack Shockey; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, Gene D. Shockey and his wife, Sylvia, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Thomas W. Shockey and his wife, Jean, of Shinnston; a brother, Harry V. Spangler and his wife, June, of Phoenix, Ariz; a daughter-in-law, Doris Shockey of Fayetteville; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. It was her request that her body be donated to the West Virginia Medical School Human Gift Registry. on December 29, 2001.2

After graduating from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a mining engineering degree, Gene Shockey dedicated his life to coal mining. For the next 50 years, Gene was an innovator for the coal industry. He was responsible for the installation of the five 1000-foot longwall, and also he created safer mining environments by developing a methane gas gathering system. He was recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to the coal industry with an honorary doctorate degree from Penn State University. Gene was an inspiration to all those who knew him. He was vice president of Virginia, Pocahontas Division, Island Creek Coal Co., Oakwood. He served as president of Virginia Coal Association. He was president of Emery Mining Corp., Huntington, Utah, vice president of Kitt Energy Corp., a subsidiary of Standard Oil of Ohio, Eastern Region, Pittsburgh, senior vice president of Jim Walters Resources, Brookwood, Ala., and vice president and assistant to the president of Consolidation Coal Co., Consol Plaza, Pittsburgh. Graveside service will be at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery. on October 24, 2002.1

An active member of the Owings Community Church, he served as both Sunday School teacher and as a trustee. In addition to his many works within the church, Tom was instrumental in establishing the “Through His Hands” benevolent outreach program, which touched many lives in the Shinnston area. Mr. Shockey was an avid outdoorsman, loved working on cars and finding projects to tinker around with. Tom worked as a truck driver and coal miner for many years. on October 17, 2007.3

B. Garbett at Oak Hill after an extended illness. A former Page resident, she was born at Dempsey, Dec. 2, 1875. Surviving are two sons, Emert of Page and Harry of Boomer; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Anderson of Man and Miss Gertrude Shockey of Oak Hill; three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Feazell, Mrs. Lillie Smith, and Mrs. Carrie Arthur, all of Fayetteville; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p. m. Thursday in the Dogget: Chapel at Dempsey by the Rev. W. F. Hodges of Scarbro. Burial will be in the Dempsey Cemetery. The body will remain at the Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill until one hour prior to services. on October 7, 1959.3

Shawkey was born on December 12, 1911 at West Virginia.1,3 She died on May 13, 2003 at Montgomery, Fayette Co., West Virginia, at age 91.3,2 She Gladys Shawkey Seacrist, 90, died May 13, 2003, in Montgomery General Hospital, Montgomery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. Seacrist. Mrs. Seacrist was a retired clerk from the hat department of Stone & Thomas Department Store. She formerly resided in Belle, where she was a member of Belle Presbyterian Church. She was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County. Surviving are two sisters, Margarette Blankenship of Beckley; Kathleen Helmick of Baltimore, Md; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be at Cunningham Memorial Park Lower Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans. on May 14, 2003.2

B. B. Breitenhirt and the Rev. John Payne in charge. Burial will be in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Mrs. Shawkey died Saturday in a local hospital after a illness. Born May 17, 1883, at Ingram in Fayette County, she was a daughter of the late James and Lucinda Canterbury Kincaid. She was a member of the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles M. of Beckley; one daughter, Mrs. Hugh Burdette of Beckley; one sister, Mrs. R. H. Grant of Beckley; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren. The body is at the funeral home where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. on May 30, 1966.1

Loyd Hall and burial will conclude in the Arapaho Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home. Viola (Shockey) Smith was born March 13, 1924 to John Shockey and Mamie (Kincaid) Shockey in Fayette County, West Virginia and passed away early Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in the Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Oklahoman. Mrs. Smith was raised in West Virginia and attended her schooling in the Oakhill School. She had to stop her formal education at very young age but continued to learn to read and write by using the Bible. She moved to Connecticut when she was a young lady to work in a needle factory during WWII. She met the love of her life and he was in the military and he moved her back to Cordell, OK where she lived with his family until he got out of the service. On February 4, 1942 they were united in marriage and made their home in Cordell for a short time. They moved to Clinton in 1946 where they lived for the rest of their married life and raised their five children. She was a member of the Arapaho 1stBaptist Church; she loved the outdoors where she spent countless hours gardening and working in her yard; she enjoyed her animals, fishing, collecting peacock feathers and she was a great cook and an accomplished seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, her parents, a sister, Ida Martin and two brothers Bill Shockey and Houston Shockey. She is survived by four daughters, Velda Jo Sams and her husband, Jim, of West, Virginia, Vonna Sue Phillips and husband Hoyt, of Clinton, Verla Beth Powers,of Arapaho, Vivian Rose Stockton, of Clinton and a son, Virgil Smith and wife, Pat, of Arapaho and a sister, Savannah Thrower, of CA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Danna Hillenbrand, of MT, Virgil Smith, Jr., of El Reno, April Stucker, of Arapaho, Amanda Pugh, of Fletcher, OK, Adam Bieberich, of Clinton, Crystal Snider, of Clinton, Melissa Hoffman, of Long Dale, OK, James Davis, of Clinton, Lori Murphy, of Arapaho, Sarah Claussen, of Thomas and John Lair, of Clinton and 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.4 She was buried at Arapaho Cemetery, Arapaho, Custer Co., Oklahoma.4,8 She was born on March 13, 1924 at Fayetteville, Fayette Co., West Virginia.5,4,9 As of February 4, 1942,her married name was Smith.4 She married Virgil Neal Smith on February 4, 1942.4,10 Viola J.      Doris Jean Paris Mrs. Doris Jean Paris Shockey of Fayetteville died on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sanford, Fla., she was the daughter of Scottish immigrants, the late Peter and Jean Ann Milne Paris. At an early age, she and her family moved to Fayette County. Mrs. Shockey received her education at Fayetteville High School, Roanoke Business College, Marshall University, and West Virginia University. For forty-four years she worked in the educational field, first as an elementary school teacher and the last twenty years as a specialist/supervisor for the Fayette County Board of Education. In 1997, she was honored at the Greenbrier as one of seven outstanding Reading/Language Arts supervisors in West Virginia. She was a trainer of trainers for the drug program, "Here's Looking at You, 2000" and "Writing to Read." She was a member of the Fayette County Retired School Employees, the Red Hat Society, the Angel Group, Fayette County Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Outstanding Women Educators, Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, and the ladies circle. Known for her inspirational devotions, she often was asked to speak at several of these civic organizations. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dennis Eye; and brother-in-law, James Arden Gravely. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Bonnie Hill and husband, Howard, and Jacqueline Eye, both of Teays Valley; son, David Shockey of Oak Hill; sister, Catherine Gravely of Oak Hill; her granddaughters, Andrea Thornton of Teays Valley and Katherine Eye of Huntington. Mrs. Comer was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Beckley. She was a homemaker; she enjoyed sewing, quilting and reading. Surviving: her beloved grandsons and their wives, John and Della Nicholas of Fayetteville, James and Jodi Nicholas of Huntsville, Ala., and Joseph and Janet Nicholas of Fayetteville; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Oct. 4 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Bishop Robert Doolittle officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant View Cemetery. on October 7, 2010.2

Shawkey of Route 2, Fayetteville; two brothers, Lacy L. of Oak Hill and C. E. of Barnagett, N.J; a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Terry of Rock Lick; and a grandchild. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dodd-Payne Funeral Chapel in Fayetteville with the Rev. Ted Fox in charge. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home. on May 18, 1964.4
