Upon returning, she found him dead in their yard with a 16-gauge shotgun wound near his heart. He had been in ill health for some time. Born Nov. 13, 1893, he was a son of the late John and Mary Dunn. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Pamela Anderson of Oceana; a stepson, Jessie White of Lerona; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Helen Whitt of Pettrey; four sisers, Mrs. James Martin of Lashmeet, Mrs. Duard Shorter of Washington, D. C., Mrs. Joe Thompson of Princeton, and Mrs. Matson Jewell of Mansfield, Ohio; and a granddaughter. Burial will be in the Bowling Cemetery at Pettrey. on June 2, 1960.7

Conner, 85, of the Pettry Road, near Athens, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at Princeton Community Hospital. Born March 31, 1925, at Speedway, he was the son of the late Carl and Anna Lee Kessinger Conner. Oakie was educated in Mercer County, and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a retired machinist, having worked for the Virginian Railroad and Norfolk-Southern Railroad with 25 years of service. He was a member of Pettry Church of Christ. Oakie loved farming and raising cattle. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Georgia Blevins, Brookie Meadows, and Gypsie Ringley. Survivors include, his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Alma Jean White Conner; four children and their spouses, Clifford and Sandy Conner of Charleston, Curtis and Nancy Conner of Bluewell, Marlene and Mark Belcher of Speedway, Sandy and Eddie Hill of Lerona; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Conner, Chad Belcher, Dustin Hill, Matthew Hill, Clayton Hill and Joey Ellison. on February 10, 2011.5

Born March 7, 1926 in Pettrey, WV he was the son of the late Clowney Conner and Oney Pettrey. Virgie was retired from the maintenance department at Concord University in Athens and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving as an M.P. in Germany with the rank of Sergeant and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Virgie was a dedicated member of Faith Baptist Church in Oakvale who attended regularly when his health permitted. Virgie not only loved his church but was an avid gardener priding himself of his crops and also loved caring for his dogs. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Melissa Kay Pennington. Survivors include his wife of sixty-one years, Clara "Peggy" Crews Conner of Ellgood; two daughters, Donna K. Brown and husband Robert McGraw and Hazel Mae Wimmer and husband Happy all of Elgood; one son, Virgie C. Conner, Jr. of Princeton; five grandchildren, Tara Bland, Shena Wimmer, Shawn Wimmer, Samantha Conner and Andrew Conner; and five great-grandchildren. Mills of New Palestine died peacefully on June 8, 2020 at the age of 77. He was born March 27, 1943 in Roanoke, VA to the late Frank Mills and Dorothy B. Hughes (nee Eubanks). Winfred served in the US Army as a Tank Commander and later a Recruiter retiring after 20 years serving from 1962-1982. He started a second career working for Tom O’Brien selling cars for over 10 years. He enjoyed working on projects with his son, especially working on cars. He will be greatly missed. He is survived children Jefferey Mills and Kathleen Melloh; grandchildren Morgan, Jacob and Kristen; and siblings Brenda Davis (Stan) and Jeff Mills. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Jeanetta K. Mills in April, and brothers Glen Mills and Frank Richard Mills.3 He was born on March 27, 1943 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,3 He married Jeanetta Katherine Harper on September 30, 1964 at Marion Co., Indiana.6,7,8 Winfred Elmore Mills died on June 8, 2020 at Indiana at age 77.3

He was a long time member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie Wagner; and his brothers, Gene and Gerald Wagner, Surviving is his devoted and loving wife of 53 years, Claudine Mills Wagner; his daughter and son-in-law, Jane W. and Darren Taylor, of Roanoke; his grandchildren; Michael, Brandon, Jordan and Devin; his sister, Florence W. Jones, of Roanoke; his sister-in-law, Helen Wagner, of Richmond; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, many special friends; special pet, Benji; and a guardian angel, Ann Coble. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Vinton. The family, would like to thank the nurses on 1 West at Friendship Manor and Good Samaritan Hospice for all their care and concern for Wayne during his illness. on January 12, 2010.5

He was born on November 30, 1952, in Roanoke, Va. to the late Edward and Reba Reese Deweese. For several years, John served as a caregiver to his dear friend, Linda Eanes. His compassion for health care came from his employment as a Monitor Tech at Lewis Gale and previously with Carilion Roanoke Memorial. He was well known as an avid NASCAR fan; however, he will be remembered most as a loving, caring, and good-hearted person. He will be sadly missed! Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his loving friend, Linda Eanes; his cousins, and many, many other friends.
