Our loss is Heaven's gain. Irene was born on April 18, 1919, a daughter of the late Olie Lee and Effie Doyle Conner of Salem. Besides being a great wife, mother and homemaker, she had worked for Woolworth's at Towers and was manager of Albert's Hosiery in Tanglewood Mall. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Bartlett; her grandson, Alton Bartlett; her sisters, Neva Conner and Georgia Brumfield; her brother, Lee Conner; and was the widow of Robert M. (Buck) Hodge, Sr. and Ernest E. Johnson, Sr. Irene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Morris Jarlenski of Roanoke; her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert (Bob) Jr. and Bonnie Hodge, Lynn and Judy Hodge, all of Roanoke, Jimmie Hodge of Eastern Shore, Va; her stepson, Ernest (Eddie) Johnson, Jr. and wife, Becky of Roanoke; her grandchildren, Kathi Richardson and husband, Glenn of Salem, Mark Hodge and wife, Donna of Roanoke, Dena White and husband, Jeff of Vinton, Brian Jarlenski of Roanoke, Kathryn Serviss and husband, B.J. of Sherman Oaks, Calif; Amy Hodge of Atlanta, Ga., April Hodge of Richmond; her great-grandchildren, Melissa, Ben and Sarah White, Kirk and Emily Richardson, Lauren Jarlenski; her sisters, Vivian Martin and husband, Tom of Salem, Jean Hedge and husband, Roger of Montgomery, Ala. The family would like to thank all her caregivers and a special thanks to caregivers and friends, Marie Jones and Shirley Weaver and her four legged bodyguard, Petey. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at Oakey's North Chapel, Friday, April 28, 2006, 12 noon with the Rev. Otto Conley officiating. Interment in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, 362-1237. on April 27, 2006.6

Mrs. Wells was retired from Eaton Yale and Town Lock Company and was a member of West Salem Baptist Church. She is survived by her special niece, Judy Pinkard and her husband John; and several other nieces and nephews; and special friends, Norma and Wayne Burleson. A graveside service will be conducted 12 noon Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Ken Nienke officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. John M. Oakey and Son, Salem, is in charge of arrangements. on March 30, 2007.1
