Jacob "Jake" Conner was buried at Cove Cemetery, Cove, Union Co., Oregon.1 He was born on October 31, 1826 at Stillwater Creek, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.5,1,3 He married Judy Shaffle on February 26, 1852 at Sigourney, Keokuk Co., Iowa.5,1,3 Jacob "Jake" Conner married Manerva Elizabeth "Neva" May on March 27, 1864 at Baker Co., Oregon.4 Jacob "Jake" Conner I was born in Ohio on a stream called Stillwater, in the year 1826, on the 31st of October. My father moved to Indiana in 1827 and settled in Layfette (Fayette Co.??). Then we moved upon the middle fork of Wildcat in the eastern part of Tippecanoe County, in 1843 we moved to Iowa and settled in Keokuk, County. We lived there until 1848. Then I went back to Larrihut, Indiana. In the spring of 1851 I went down on a flat boat to New Orleans, then up the Mississippi to Burlington, Iowa. From there I walked home, 75 miles in three days. I stayed with my father until I got married. That was on the 26th day of February 1852. I married Judy Shaffle. We started across the plains in March with one yoke of oxen and one yoke of cows and a little wagon. We got to the Dalles on the 20th of October, 1852. There I hired an Indian to take us down the Cascade where we packed our things to the boat landing, a distance of eleven miles, and got on James Stevens Flatboat. He took us to Portland. We got here on the 30th of October. It rained continually. I struck camp on second street, called Washington Street, in the timber. I lived there until I moved to the Slough - Louis Love's place. I logged two years then I moved to Portland. I lived there until my wife died in the year 1859. Then I went to Jacksonville, southern Oregon. I spent one summer there in the mines, then I spent two years in Ora, Fino and Salmon river. In the fall of 1862 I settled in Grande Valley, in the Cove, before there was a house built there. I have lived there ever since. I married Neva E. May in 1864. She died in 1876. I have two children by my first wife and three by my last wife that are living and six are dead. My ups and downs have been many. I went out of this valley to see the first railroad in this country. It was at the Dalles. I had a yoke of cattle and offered to trade my yoke of cattle to the train men for their entire train, even. I came home to the Cove and started back to Iowa on the stage. When I got to Caldwell, Idaho, I took the cars. I was gone about two months. I have been on the frontier all my life and I thought I would go and see my kin folks. I had been gone about 33 years. They did not know me when I met them. While I was there, they got to calling me "Uncle Jake". I still go by that name. Here I have two hundred acres of lands, all but forty acres in cultivation. I have a good orchard, three thousand pounds of winter apples in my seller waiting for spring market. On July 8th 1861 I started with two men across the Cascade mountains. We traveled through snow four feet deep and made our way to Ora Fina mines in Idaho. I worked for Owen Barten in the mines until the Salmon River Excitement broke out. A man by the name Lon Simmons wanted to go with us. I bought a pony, paid $75 for him. Lon bought the grub and we packed the pony and started out on Doc Leatherman's trail. We overtook him that night. He was asleep and we took him up. Next morning we got in with him to pack his horses. Bridger, his partner, had gone ahead and got lost, but he followed our trail and followed up. One hundred and fifty men were trying to see who would get there first. The third day we got there. I went to work prospecting. For two weeks it snowed so much that I sold my horse and saddle for $16 for Lon Simmons to go out on. I stayed there until December. The snow was three feet deep. John Parker, Ben Kilburn and myself started out and a man of the name of Boneparte came to us with a sack of gold that weighed twelve pounds and said he wanted to go with us to Lewiston, Idaho, but at State Creek he got a horse and went on. We walked for five days without anything to eat until we got to Lewiston, Idaho. We carried John Parker in on his knees, having given out going down Craige Mountain so that he could not walk. We got in about 10 O'clock in the night. I went to the fort and got three feet of Bologna, one sack of cracker, a piece of cheese and one package of coffee and we went to eating. When the first bell rang in the morning, we got our breakfast and paid three dollars for it. We laid a supply of cheese and crackers and sausages and hired a man by the name of Snapping Andy to take us to Wallulla in Hudson by canoe. Eighteen men paid five dollars a piece at Wallulla we got on a stem (steam?) boat and started for Celilo. We landed thereafter night. The stages were all full so we had to walk sixteen miles after night to the Dalles. We took the boat the next morning for Portland. I wintered at Portland that winter. In the spring of 1862 I started for Salmon River in company of Adam Macktime. We had three horses packed and one to ride. We went on a steamer to the Dalles and took the train to Walla Walla thence to Lewiston, Idaho, then to Florence. We got to the mountain, going down to the head of Slate Creek. The snow was ten feet deep but we got safely into Florence. I traded horses and grub for a claim. It did not pay. I sold it and went to Elk City, where I worked one month. Five men wanted me to go to Warren's diggings. We got lost southwest of Buffalo Hump, but struck a trail which took us to Florence. Then I thought I would go home. I went to Lewiston the next morning. They had three men hung on a pole back of the jail. I started to Walla Walla, Washington. Two men there wanted me to go to Auburn, Oregon. I got there and took a contract to winter 60 head of oxen for Dolph and Downs. I was to bring them to Grande Ronde valley to winter. I wintered them in Cove. There was how I came to settle in Cove. Say, Mr. Editor. I am not a pioneer and never will be until they move the graves out of old man Albertson's corral and street where my pioneer friends of 1852 were buried in old LaGrande. I have taken the scout, and enjoyed reading it, ever since it first started. Yours Truly, Jacob Conner (Copied from B. J. Conner's book, pages 203 and 204.) According to the second paragraph above, Jacob had a total of 11 children. Only nine are listed here. in August, 1896.3 He died on August 26, 1896 at Cove, Union Co., Oregon, at age 69; Killed when he was either kicked or thrown by a horse.1
