Rhodes Smith1,2,3,4,5

     Rhodes Smith Rhodes was the principle man of an early Predestinarian (Hard-Shell) Baptist Church which met in an old log school house near Conkeytown (a for-runner of the Cass one-room school that later served the area). The minister was Elder John Orr. In 1858 Rhodes moved north up Stony Creek to "Crab Apple Grove" He took the church and Elder Orr with him. At first, services were held in the home of Rhodes Smith and later in the Gorman School House. Member's were John Orr & wife, Rhodes Smith & wife, Jesse Berk & wife, Thomas Cox & wife, James Smith, William Smith, Martin Orr & wife, Nancy Truax and Rebecca Truax. This congregation built a church in 1876, one and 1/2 miles north of the village of Oakwood. Rhodes and Christiana move away before then.6 He was buried at Allhands Cemetery, Danville, Vermilion Co., Illinois.7,5 He was born on July 29, 1803 at Scott Co., Kentucky.8,9,2,5 He married Christianna Conner, daughter of Rev. Conner of McComas, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Burial will follow at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery. on April 12, 1976.8

     William Anthony Yeatts was buried at Yates Family Cemetery, near Stonewall Church, one-half mile off 4366 Rt. 221 N., Floyd Co., Virginia.1,2 He was born on January 16, 1835 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Mary Henry Terry Yates, daughter of William Riceville/Rice Yates and Elizabeth "Betsy" McLaughlin, on November 10, 1857 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2,7,6 William Anthony Yeatts During the Civil War, William A. Yeatts was listed on the Regimental Return of Nov 1861 of Company A, 51st Virginia Militia. He then enlisted as a Private in Captain Carpenter's Company of the Virginia Light Artillery. He was wounded in the war and when he returned to duty he worked in the blacksmith shop for the Union. His wife received a pension from the Federal government. He was listed as 5 feet, 9 1/2 inches in height, light complexion, and grey eyes. in November, 1861.2 He died on May 15, 1906 at Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 71.1,2 He left a will on July 6, 1906; "I William A. Yeatts of the County of Floyd and State of Virginia being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make my last will and testament in manner and form following. After the payment of all my personal debts if any there be, my belongings shall be distributed as follows: "First, I give, devise and bequeath to my wife Mary H. all my property, real personal and mixed of what nature and kind soever and wherever, the same shall be at the time of my death. This all to belong to my wife during her natural life. Also that after my decease my son, John W. Yeatts, shall take possession of the lands and cultivate the same and pay the rents to my wife also that he shall attend to all the business matters of the farm. "Second, After the death of my wife Mary H. all of the above named property shall go - by the right of this will to my son John w. Yeatts on conditions as follows: John W. shall pay to the heirs named below two hundred dollars each, C. A. Yeatts, F. G. Yeatts, B. S. Yeatts, Sarah E. King (and her heirs), Mary B. Conner, Martha N. King (and her heirs). All the above named heirs to receive two hundred dollars each. Then he shall pay to Virginia J. Yeatts the sum of three hundred dollars. This last named heir, Virginia J. shall be paid out of the personal property. If there should not be enough of personal property to pay the said $300.00 then there shall be enough equally deducted from the claims of the other heirs to make out the $300.00 in favor of Virginia J. Yeatts. "It is provided that if my son John W. Yeatts should for any purpose fail to take up and carry out my will as herein stated, then my son F. G. Yeatts shall take his place on like conditions. "It is further provided herein that the one complying with the will - whether John W. or F. G. if he should excess necessary expenses beyond his part he shall be paid a reasonable sum therefor. "It is herein provided that $5.00 per year shall be reserved by my wife out of the rent for my farm and paid over to the pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Stonewall for each year during her natural life. "In witness where of I William A. Yeatts, the testator, have to this my last will and testament, set my hand and seal this the 12th day of May 1906. Witnesses: Rev. J. K. Rumburg, Walter Richards Virginia, In clerks office of the Circuit Court of Floyd County, July 6th, 1906. This day a paper purporting to be the last Will of W. A. Yeatts, deceased was produced before me in my office, and proved by the oath of Rev. J. K. Ruznburg, one of the subscribing witnesses thereto, and admitted to probate and ordered to be rcorded. Teste, B. S. Pedigo, Clerk Yeatts, William A............Little River.2 He SALE NOTICE - As Executor of the will of W(illiam) A(nthony). Yates deceased, I will sell at Public Auction on Jan 20. 1928 (this was shortly after his wife Mary passed away), at his residence 9 miles east of Floyd, stonewall the following property.
