John Lawrence Witt Jr. was buried at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, Fayette Co., West Virginia.3 His Social Security Number was 236-30-1581.5 He FAYETTEVILLE – John Lawrence Witt, Jr., 86, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, January 9, 2012 at the Ansted Center at Ansted. Born on February 1, 1925 at Cunard, he was the son of the late John Lawrence Witt, Sr. and Ruth Ann Jennings Witt. A native West Virginian, John Witt volunteered for service in 1942 in the Army during World War II. Upon completing Basic Training, he was shipped overseas to the European Theater with the 127th AAA Gun Battalion, arriving in Omaha Beach in Normandy, participating in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, onward through Holland and into Germany. John became deeply involved in communications in the Army and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant before the age of 21. He returned home in 1946 where he was awarded his high school diploma and married his beautiful wife, Constance. In 1949, John moved his family to Maryland long enough to attend the Baltimore Technical School for a degree in electronics. Following his graduation, he and his family returned to West Virginia where he worked in the retail business for one year prior to opening his own business, Radio-TV Clinic in his hometown of Fayetteville. John had a vision for what was coming in the field of communication so he sold his business in 1970 and went to work for the Fayette County Board of Education in the audio/visual division. He was responsible for wiring all the schools in Fayette County for closed-circuit-TV capability. His interest in communications provided an opportunity in the early days of NASA's space travel for him to receive pictures from space which he shared with students of the community. He was appointed as a member of the Fayetteville Town Council from 1963-1965 and then elected as mayor where he held the position from 1965-1983. Upon his retirement from the Board of Education in 1987, he was elected to the Fayette County Commission and continued the work of a public servant. He was instrumental in several community projects, including bringing Route 19 through the town of Fayetteville, developing water services in rural Fayette County, helping found "Bridge Day", assisting in the establishment of the Office of Emergency Services' 911 System, member of the Rotary Club since 1960 where he was presented the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, charter member of the LaFayette Post 149 of the American Legion where he served in all chair positions including the District Commander and State Vice-Commander. He was awarded the West Virginian of the Year for 2002 and was instrumental in many, many other public service initiatives. He also served on the 4C Development Council and Region 4 Council. With all his accomplishments in public service, John Witt never lost an election! John was a member of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Amateur Radio League and his call sign was W80QC. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Robert Witt and Melvin Jennings Witt. Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Constance Akers Witt of Fayetteville; three children, Jon Gregory Witt and wife, Pat of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Stephanie Lynn Koren and husband, Jon of Mineral, VA, and Paul A. Witt of Fayetteville; two sisters, Martha Crow and husband, Lonnie of Lady Lake, FL, and Connie Jones of Portland, OR; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 AM, Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church with his nephew, Rev. Chris Witt and Rev. Clare Sulgit-Horn officiating. Burial with military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post 149 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville.3 He was born on February 1, 1925 at Cunard, Fayette Co., West Virginia.2,3,5,4 He married Constance Ann "Connie" Akers, daughter of Other Lee Akers and Aldena Hoback, on May 25, 1946 at Oak Hill, Fayette Co., West Virginia.2,6,3 John Lawrence Witt Jr. died on January 9, 2012 at Ansted, Fayette Co., West Virginia, at age 86.3,5
