He was born on December 22, 1944, in New Altamont Hospital, Christiansburg. He was preceded in death by parents, Riley Tazewell and Anna Ella Martin Dickerson. He grew up in the Alleghany Springs section of Shawsville in Montgomery County and graduated from Alleghany District High School in 1965. In 1970 Watson and his family moved to Moncure, N.C., for work opportunities. He lived in several locations of North Carolina for 46 years. He is survived by a son, Robert Dwayne "Bobby" Dickerson (Amelia) of Pittsboro, N.C; a daughter, Teresa Dawn Morton (David) of Wilmington, N.C; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lynne Dickerson, Rhonda Michelle Gordon (Dakota), Victoria Nicole Dickerson, Adam Allen Morton, Ashley Nicole Morton; and one great-grandchild, Hunner Red Gordon. He is also survived by one brother, Marshall Dickerson (Donna) of Vinton; three sisters, Betty Sowder (Jim) of Mechanicsville, Jeanette Graham of Shawsville, Edna Conner of Salem. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. He loved gardening and fishing at a favorite spot on Jordan Lake. He also loved woodworking and making wooden gifts he gave to the family. He pursued a vocation in building, construction, cabinetry, and landscaping. He had a special talent in the details of cabinetry. He worked for Boise Cascade, Knowles Cabinet Shop, Buies Creek Landscaping, and P and L Construction Co., among others. He often spoke of moving back to Alleghany Springs, but only in death is this dream realized. He will have his final rest in the Piedmont Cemetery, Alleghany Springs section of Shawsville, Va. on July 10, 2016.4

He was born on February 2, 1932, in Henry County, Va., to the late Esley Whitlock and Lessie Witt. On June 27, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Prillaman. They were married 68 years. Carl joined the U.S. Army shortly after their wedding and served as an ambulance driver from 1952 to 1954 in the Korean War. After service, he graduated from University of Virginia Hospital's X-Ray Technician Program. He then worked as Chief X-Ray Technician at Kings Daughters Hospital in Staunton, Va. and later Pulaski Hospital in Pulaski, Va. In 1961, Carl moved to Galax, Va., where he remained for the rest of his life. He owned a variety of businesses over the years including mobile home sales, a clothing store, car washes and a contracting company. He attended Galax Presbyterian Church for 56 years where he served as a deacon and later elder. In the 1990s, he supervised the building of the church's Warrick Hall. He will always be remembered by family and friends for his good humor and remarkable ability to make everyone around him laugh. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. His breadth of knowledge about antique cars was unmatched. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Evelyn Whitlock Daniel; brother, Roy Whitlock; and son-in-law, David Lyons. He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; daughters, Lisa Lyons of Rock Hill, S.C., and Cynthia Johnson (Christopher Rheinschild) of Clemmons, N.C; granddaughters, Erica Ververs (James) of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Hannah Johnson of Richmond, Va; brothers, John "Buck" Whitlock (Jean), Billy Whitlock (Ann), and Jerry Whitlock, all of Fieldale, Va; and several nieces and nephews. A drive-thru visitation will be held Saturday, December 5, 2020, from 11 a.m. until noon at Felts Cemetery. on December 2, 2020.4

He also was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Macey Whitlock; one sister, Marcella Hagy; and one grandson. Whitlock was employed by Hooker Furniture until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Collinsville, where he was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class and a member of the Knights of Phythias. Surviving are two daughters, Carole Holt of Morehead City and Patricia Ann Wine of Collinsville; two sons, James D.
