     Russell Randolph McDaniel Russell Randolph (Mac) McDaniel of Roanoke, Va., passed away in his home on Thursday morning, January 18, 2018, at the age of 95. He was born on May 22, 1922, in Elliston, Va. Russell was the first of six children born to Radie Mae McDaniel and Warren Cleveland McDaniel. He was married for over 68 years to Luella Copley McDaniel. The two enjoyed a loving marriage, and were dedicated to each other’s care and well-being until the time of Luella’s death in 2010. They were active members of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke for many years. Russell had a long career working for the railroad and retired as Manager of Motive Power and Equipment at Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1984. He held a certificate from Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. Russell graduated with a B.A. in Electrical Engineering in 1948 from Virginia Tech, where he attended college on the G.I. Bill after serving in the 103rd Infantry Division in World War II. Russell loved woodworking, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and son. Russell was a pillar of quiet strength and stability and a model of principle, integrity, and decency for so many both in and out of his family, and will be very dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luella Copley McDaniel; daughter, Judith McDaniel Wood; brother, Carson McDaniel; and parents, Radie and Warren McDaniel. Russell is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hagood; sons-in-law, Richard Hagood and Thomas Wood; grandchildren, Katherine Wood and Russell Hagood; stepgrandchild, Wesley Wood; brothers, Hastel McDaniel, Douglas McDaniel and Danny McDaniel; and sister, Juanita Seagle. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Home Instead and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for providing such excellent care toward the end of Russell’s life. Extra thanks are due to Cendy Moran, Dorris Bare, Amy Newman, and Carla Weaver. Your dedicated, loving, and compassionate care made his last years immeasurably more comfortable, and was very greatly appreciated by us, and by him. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Vada McDaniel; his parents and great-granddaughter, Kamryn Anne Bailey. Surviving are two daughters, Dianne McDaniel and Sharon Barrow (husband Jim); granddaughter, Sherry Bailey; grandson, Jeff Ballard; three great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Kathryn, and Kyler Bailey; four brothers, Russell McDaniel, of Roanoke, Va., Hastel McDaniel, of Virginia Beach, Va., Doug McDaniel, of Goode, Va., Danny McDaniel, of Wytheville, Va.; sister, Juanita Seagle, of Wytheville, Va., special neighbors, Jack and Nada Moore; his faithful canines, Lilly and Joey; and numerous family members. A funeral service will be held at Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel. Thank you to the Sentara Hospice Group and the Seniorcorp for their tender care and assistance during the last weeks of Mac's life. Doug was a Korean war veteran serving in the United States Army. He served the Lord as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed volunteering at the Shepherds Table in Bedford for almost 20 years. He was also a member of the Goode Bedford Ruitan Club. Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Bralley McDaniel; sons, Douglas McDaniel Jr. (Sherrill), and George McDaniel (Kimberly); four precious grandchildren, Megan Yost (Bill) of Colorado, George Jr. of Alexandra, Va., Emilee McDaniel of Roanoke and D.J. III of Goode; sisters, Juanita Seagle of Roanoke; brother, Danny McDaniel (Ellen) of Wytheville, Va; sisters-in-law, Joline BeCraft and Patsy Grubb of Wytheville; eight nieces and four nephews; a host of friends and special golfing buddies, two very special friends, Vic Horton and Bob Plaster, whom were as close as brothers. A graveside service will be held at Mount Hermon Baptist Church. on May 15, 2020.4

In addition to her parents, Luella was preceded in death by her sisters, Estelle Harris, Romaine Conley, and her brothers Troy and Bascom (June) Copley. Luella is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Russell Randolph McDaniel; their two daughters, Judith McDaniel Wood (husband Thomas Wood) and Deborah McDaniel Hagood (husband Richard Hagood); and their two grandchildren, Katherine Randolph Wood and Russell Kennedy Hagood. Luella was an incredibly loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and will be dearly missed. She consistently put others' needs ahead of her own. Luella loved to laugh and entertain, and could tell stories for hours. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke. She was an excellent athlete and top-notch bowler. She was passionate about cooking, and despite losing most of her eyesight seven years ago, Luella continued to maintain her home and cook amazing food for her whole family. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. on December 20, 2010.1

She and her younger sister, Debbie, grew up in several towns in Virginia and West Virginia as her father climbed the corporate ladder at Norfolk and Western Railway. She graduated high school at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va., and entered Mary Washington College in Mathematics. After transferring to Virginia Tech, she graduated in 1970 with BA degrees in Economics and History, and a minor in Mathematics. Upon graduation, she worked for a few years at the Fifth Planning District Commission in Roanoke and the Model Cites program in Richmond, Va. Returning to graduate school, Judy enrolled at the Darden School of Business at The University of Virginia. She graduated with a Master's degree in Business Administration in 1975, and subsequently worked for Mead Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, and Bendix Corporation as a Human resources and training manager. In 1980, Judy married Thomas Wood of Roanoke, a classmate of hers at Virginia Tech, and they moved to Davenport, Iowa, where their daughter, Katherine Randolph Wood was born a year later. Shortly after, they moved to Kansas City where Judy worked and cared for a very ill Katie and Tom's son by his first marriage, William Wesley Wood. Judy followed Tom to a new job in Washington, D.C., when her daughter's health permitted. After both worked for several years in Washington, D.C., the family moved in 1990 to Kennewick, Wash., where Judy has since resided. Judy raised both kids with energy, care, and love. The family attended United Methodist Church in Kennewick. She worked for Columbia Industries, Cogema Corporation, and taught mathematics in the Kennewick school system. She traveled frequently to Roanoke to care for her aging parents. She loved live rock music and traveled to many concerts with her sister and friends. Throughout her career, Judy was a strong and effective advocate for women's rights and equity in the workplace, sacrificing personal gain to do the right thing for her co-workers on many occasions. Judy was a devoted and caring daughter, sister, mother, stepmother, and wife. She provided opportunity and encouragement for all around her, and had many friends from all walks of life. While she struggled with mental illness late in life, she was recognized by all who knew her as a kind and generous soul. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Wood of Kennewick, Wash; daughter, Katherine Wood of Roanoke, Va; stepson, William Wood and his wife, Shannon Wood, of Watertown N.Y; sister, Deborah Hagood and brother-in-law, Richard Hagood of Roanoke, Va; nephew, Russell Hagood of Roanoke, Va; and father, Russell McDaniel of Roanoke, Va. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. on March 20, 2016.5 She died on May 8, 2016 at Kennewick, Benton Co., Washington, at age 68.5,7

Mrs. McDaniel was born February 3, 1927 in Meadow-Grove NE to the late James Cecil and late Martha Ann Young Mink. She enjoyed going to Smith Mountain Lake, fishing, and growing her flowers. She was a great cook and you never left her home hungry. Vada was a very kind and caring lady and never met a stranger. She was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parent Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by a great granddaughter; Kamryn Anne Bailey, one sister and two brothers. Surviving are her husband of 63 years; Carson McDaniel of the home. Two daughters; Dianne McDaniel and Sharon (Jim) Barrow. One granddaughter; Sherry Bailey and one grandson; Jeff (Danielle) Ballard. Three great grandchildren; Karsyn, Kathryn, and Kyler Bailey as well as numerous extended family members. A graveside service will be conducted at the Gardens of Memory, in Walkertown. on October 14, 2009.2
