Her surviving family includes her daughters, Susan Cousins of Roanoke, Virginia, Penny Fitzgerald and her husband, M.R. of Maryville, Tennessee, and Nancy Potter and her husband, Elmer of Martinsville, Virginia; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. She was born December 12, 1919, in Floyd County to the late Moses and Nettie Gay Conner. She enjoyed attending church, quilting, sewing, traveling, and was an avid reader. Above all, she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Moyer Blankenship; son, John A. Blankenship Sr; grandson, John A. Blankenship Jr; brothers, Avon Conner and Loys Conner; and sisters, Madelene Cousins and Evadene Dockery. Family left to cherish her memory includes her son, Paul Blankenship and wife, Trudy; daughter, Helen Coleman and husband, Ivan; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren . Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends Sunday, February 3, 2013, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son funeral home in Salem. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, at the Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001. on February 2, 2013.2

He was the son of the late Leonard and Gladys Elmore of New Castle. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as radio operator. He was preceded in death by his father; his first wife, Frances Poff Elmore; and his daughter, Sandi Lizbeth Elmore. He is survived by his devoted wife, Judy Williams Elmore; daughters and sons-in-law, Sonia E. and Wayne M. Barnhart of Roanoke, Sherry E. and Charles Dort of Staunton; son and daughter-in-law, Scott L. and Diane T. Elmore of Salem; six grandchildren, Tresha Carroll, Dominique Gutierrez, Desiree Thomas, Mindy Thomas, Benjamin and Bradley Elmore; two great-grandchildren, Manuel and Marcel Gutierrez; five brothers, Roger, Charlie, Ronnie, Robert, and Johnnie; two sisters, Marie Smith and Betty Combs. Burial will take place at Sherwood Memorial Park. on September 4, 1998.2

He was, for many years, a devoted member of Faith Baptist Church in Covington. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Jean Vass Elmore, of Covington; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Susan Elmore of Clifton Forge; a son, Shane Elmore of Covington; six grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger and Anita Elmore of Tecumseh, Kan., Ronnie and Mary Elmore of Vinton, Robert and Jean Elmore, and Johnnie and Diane Elmore, all of New Castle; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Lonis Smith of Salem, and Bettie and R. B. Combs of New Castle; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Judy Elmore of Roanoke; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Elmore was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard "Bud" Elmore in 1998. The funeral service will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home. Interment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive their friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home. on January 20, 1999.2
