The body will be taken from the Dodd-Payne Funeral Home to the church one hour before the services. on November 4, 1961.6

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Church of God in Fayetteville with the Rev. William Dreger and the Rev. Charles Thompson in charge. Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Nadine M. Poff of Fayetteville; two sons, Allen R. Poff of Gauley Bridge, and Joseph D. Poff of Fayetteville; one sister, Nancy Jeffries of Richmond, Va; two grandchildren, Edward Allen Poff II of Fayetteville, and Rachelle L. Legg of Hilltop; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Lee Holliday officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Booty was a member of Fayetteville United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and usher for many years. He graduated from Gauley Bridge High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired in 1978 from Union Carbide, Alloy, after 44 years of service where he was a maintenance supervisor. He was very active in the community, enjoyed talking to people, calling Bingo at the American Legion, doing charity work and working at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church Food Pantry. He was active in several organizations, including: past commander of American Legion Post 149, Fayetteville, past president of the Fayetteville Lions Club, helping the sight conservation project and the Adopt-a-Highway project, past president of the local chapter of AARP, past member of the Fayette County Democratic Executive Committee, a past member of the Fayetteville Town Council, served two years in the Silver-Haired Legislature, was a member of the Association of Retired School Employees, voice of Fayetteville High School football for approximately 40 years, a member of the FHS Coordinating Committee for the senior graduation party and was proud to be the oldest member of the "Angel" support group. His wife, Edith Blanche Poff Bess; and his brother, Robert Leon "R.L." Bess, preceded him in death. Survivors include his four sons and their wives, Norman and Barbara Bess of Richmond, Va., Joe and Beth Bess of San Antonio, Texas, Lee and Mollie Bess of Richmond, Va., Claude and Kay Bess of Fayetteville; two daughters and their husbands, the Rev. Claudette and the Rev. Max Nichols of Christiansburg, Va., Rebecca and Grant Cherrington of Charlotte, N.C; 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Fayetteville United Methodist Church with Charlie Garvin, the Rev. Max Nichols and the Rev. David A. Stackpole officiating. Burial will follow in Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military rites conducted by VFW Post 3110, Oak Hill. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville. All through his pastoral life, the Rev. Nichols had a love for people. God allowed many Godly and interesting people to enter his life. He always felt that he was blessed by God more than he was ever able to bless. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home on Friday, November 13, 2009.
