He was born in Floyd County, Va., on August 12, 1937, a son of the late Brethard and Susie Collins Vest. Alvin retired from Rowe Furniture Corporation in 1999 after 44 years of service.      Alwyn Courtney Vandergrift Alwyn "Al" Courtney Vandergrift, November 1, 1944 – July 12, 2020. After a brief illness, Alwyn "Al" Courtney Vandergrift, age 75, peacefully went to heaven early on the morning of July 12, 2020. After a career in retail furniture sales and management, he spent his retirement hunting, golfing, taking cruises with his wife of 52 years, and adoring his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Paige Vandergrift, son Michael Vandergrift, daughter Sarah Oberhofer, son-in-law Justin Oberhofer, grandchildren Vincent Oberhofer and Emma Oberhofer, sister-in-law Margaret Coffey, nieces Jan Coffey and Jean Coffey, family friend Donna Gentile, and numerous cousins. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Etta Mae Hall; and their four sons, Bruce Hall and wife, Jackie of Ocala, Fla., David Hall and wife, Tanya of Mechanicsville, Tim Hall and wife, Shelia of Mechanicsville and William Hall of Los Angeles. He is also survived by his brother Everett Hall of Christiansburg, Va; and his two sisters, Marie Tolbert of Boonesmill, Va. and Betty McFarland of Richmond Va. Herman was born in McDowell County, W.Va., June 24, 1933. At the age of 16, he moved to Floyd County, Va., where he met Etta Mae Link at "The Head of the River." They married in 1951 and settled in Christiansburg Va. From 1953-1955, Herman served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea for 17 months.Throughout his life, Herman loved anything with wheels. He even made a career with that love, driving for Trailways and Mason Dixon. He also loved wagons, bicycles, motorcycles, go-carts, cars, trucks, tractors and even airplanes. His five grandchildren have all used him as their "mechanic of choice" and his five great-grandchildren, who call him P. Pops, have also acquired his love for things with wheels. Graveside services will be held at Rest Vale Cemetery, Cooper Hill, Va. on May 2, 2014.⁶
