He was stricken ill at his home and was dead on arrival at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Belew was one of the first men in this area to go into the custom combine business, and continued to operate it until his death. He had worked northward in the wheat harvest this summer as he did each year. Along with it, he was also a partner in a farm equipment business for a number of years. Earlier, he farmed in the Loco community for many years. Born Nov. 28, 1010, in Montague County, he was the son of G.D. Belew of Wellington and the late Mrs. Fannie Belew. He came here, along with other members of his family, in 1931 from Grayson County. Surviving Mr. Belew are his wife, Mrs. Mary Belew, five sons and five daughters: Kenneth Patterson and Alton Belew of Wellington, Leroy Belew of Pampa, Donnie Belew of White Deer, and Jerry Belew and Mrs, J. L. Jarvis of Grenla, La, Mrs. Doyle Winegeart of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Jimmy Langford and Miss Linda Belew of Wellington, and Miss Patricia Belew of Wichita, Kansas. Other survivors are his father, G. D. Belew of Wellington; five brothers: Herman Belew and T. P. Belew of Wellington, Grady Belew of Chnnnlng, Robert Belew and Weldon Belew of Oklahoma City; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. on October 23, 1969.5

He was born on May 13, 1929, in Littlefield, Texas, to Maude and James Michael Poff. He moved to Portales with his family in 1931. He was working on a ranch in Elida when he contracted Polio in 1949. After he was able to work again, he drove tractors for area farmers. He belonged to the University Baptist Church. Family members said he enjoyed playing dominos and working jigsaw puzzles and as long as he was able to go, he enjoyed hunting and fishing even though he was unable to walk. Family members said he was very outgoing and friendly and was always willing to render help to anyone with anything he was able to do. Since 1991 he had been a resident at Golden Acres where family members said he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends and he also enjoyed the time he spent at Portales Senior Citizens. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Millard, Cecil and Archie Poff; and three sisters, Lorene Turner, and Cleo and Velma Summers. Survivors include two sisters, Bertie Wallace and Opal Johnson, both of Portales; and his housekeeper and friend, Rita Ornelas of Portales. The Rev. M. V. Summers will officiate the services. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers are Orvel Turner, Monty Johnson, Lynn Poff, Travis Johnson, John Wallace and William Summers. Opal Johnson was born July 6, 1931, in Littlefield, TX to the home of Maud and James M. Poff, and died August 24, 2012, in Portales, NM. The family moved to Elida when she was a young girl, and then settled in Bethel. She attended school at Floyd where she graduated from high school in 1949. On June 8, 1949, in Santa Rosa, NM she was married to Eldridge "Red" Johnson. They lived in several places during their early years, but finally made Portales their permanent home in the mid 1950's. Through the years, Opal had worked at the Selected Casings Plant, in the school cafeterias, as a housekeeper at ENMU, and finally at the Adult Day Care Center. Opal was a member of the University Baptist Church, and the Portales Senior Citizens. She enjoyed sewing, and decorating the clothes with fabric paint, and fishing and arrowhead hunting with her husband. Opal also loved to dance, and went to Senior Citizens Dances all over New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Travis and Dixie Johnson of Roswell and Monty Johnson of Portales; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Wilbanks of TX; one granddaughter; three step-grandchildren, Lance Bateman, Launa Waller, and Lori Collins, and a sister, Bertie Wallace of Portales. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Millard, Cecil, Archie and Oscar Poff, three sisters, Velma Summers, Cleo Summers and Lorene Turner, and by her husband, Red Johnson, who died September 12, 1995. on August 26, 2012.2
