Bower, of Reistertown, Md; two sisters, Mrs. Roxanna Nugen and Mrs. Minnie E. Cannaday, both of Coal City; a son, Varney E. Lilly, of Beckley; three daughters, Mrs. Nora V. Duncan, Mrs. Garnet O'Donnel and Mrs. Janet Gray, all of Coal City three grandchildren and one great grandchild. The body will be removed to the residence at 4 p.m. today from the Williams Funeral Home. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Coal City Community Church with Elder Lowell Lilly in charge, assisted by Elder Owen Harvey. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dewey Farley, Earl Farley, Blaine Farley, Virgil Bower, Jimmy Bower and Roy Bower. on September 11, 1953.4

The body will be taken to the church from the Williams Funeral Home in MacArthur one hour prior to the services. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today. on February 3, 1969.2

He was a member of the Coal City Primitive Baptist Church and was a retired teacher and postmaster at Coal City. Survivors include a son, Varney of Gretna, La; three daughters, Mrs. Nora Duncan of Coal City, Mrs. Janet Gray of Beckley and Mrs. Garnet O'Donnell of Orlando, Fla; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Phlegar of Princeton and Mrs. Lottie Brammer of Beckley; a brother, Lawrence Lilly of Beaver; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Coal City Community Church by the Rev. Ira Toler. Burial will follow in the Coal City Community Church. The body is at the Keyser-Bryant Funeral Home, where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. It will be removed to the church one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be Posie Stanley, John Davis Jr., O'Dell Herron, Orlan Lilly, Clay Duncan and Zeb Duncan. Members of the Dogwood Garden Club will serve as flowerbearers. on August 2, 1965.6

Also as usual, they entered the Deerfield mine of the Pocahontas Fuel Co. together. Shortly after they entered the mine at about 8 a.m., Gearhart suffered a broken leg when a coal mine car turned over on him. Gearhart, a joy operator, was taken to Beckley Memorial Hospital. Shortly after Gearhart was injured, Fred Canaday, 61, became ill inside the mine and was brought from the mine. Canaday died while en route to the office of a Mullens doctor in a Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home ambulance. Canaday was taken to the Wyoming General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Born March 31, 1897, at Crab Orchard, he was a son of the late Mac and Martha Gray Canaday. Survivors other than his brother Stephen include his widow, Damey of near Spencer; three sons, Paul and Fred, both of Dunbar, and Donald of Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Jay Hollyfield of Dunbar and Miss Lake Canaday of Spencer; two brothers, Wilson of Akron, Ohio, and Charley, with the Air Force in Tokyo; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Bowman of Roanoke, and Mrs. May Cole of Coal City. The body is at the Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home in Mullens. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. on August 21, 1958.8
