     John Harvey Gearheart was buried at Gearheart Family Farm, Mattox Mountain, Floyd Co., Virginia.3 He Served in Company I, 54th Virginia Infantry, Conferderate States Army. John Harvey Gearhart, along with his brother (William Riley) and serveral other men from Floyd County deserted the Army shortly before the end of the Civil War. They walked home to Floyd County from North Carolina. They said the war was a lost cause, and it seemed no use to keep on fighting. The army sent people to bring them back, dead or alive. They was hid in a pit, under a brushpile in a field that their father was clearing. Their father slipped them food and water at night, they hid there until the end of the war.2 He was born in January, 1842 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,5 He married Massie Mahala Wilson, daughter of Isaac Wilson and Elsa/Aisley "Elsie" Cole, on August 20, 1868 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1 John Harvey Gearheart died in 1901 at Mattox Mountain, Floyd Co., Virginia; Died of tuberculosis.2
