Fred Layman Conner was buried at Piedmont Cemetery, Rt. 11 to Shawsville, turn at nursing home, Rt. 637, about 8 miles on the left, Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,5,6 His Social Security Number was 223-70-8997.9 He married Connie Sue Smith.6,8 Fred Layman Conner was born on July 8, 1950 at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,5,6,7,10 He died on January 7, 1971 at Shawsville, Montgomery Co., Virginia, at age 20.1,5,6 He In what an official called a "freak and very tragic accident" a 20-year-oid State Highway Department worker was killed in a bin on Christiansburg Mountain where crews were mixing salt and chloride compounds Thursday. Fred Layman Conner, of Shawsville, who had been employed by the department since Sept 28, 1970, was killed in the accident. According to a highway department official, Conner and his supervisor were at the top of the bin where the chloride is spread on the salt. The supervisor told Conner he was going down to help other workers unload the mixed compound, and told him not to enter the bin. The supervisor went below and two truckloads of the salt and chloride compound were loaded when it was noticed Conner was missing. According to the official, the men looked in the bin, searched neighboring highways and called to Conner. They thought he had left the area. The crew dumped more salt and chloride into the bin and let twp more truckloads of compound out of the bin when a shovel came out of one of the chutes. The official said no alarm was raised at the sight of the shovel since tools are frequently lost in the compound while mixing materials. However, one of Conner’s feet then appeared in the chute. His body was not dismembered, the official said. The workers opened all the chutes and recovered the body as quickly as possible, the official said, but Conner was dead. The full bag of chloride was found in the mixture with him. The official said no reason has been determined as to why and how Conner entered the bin, but there was no indication of foul play. Surviving are his wife, Connie Smith Conner; a son, Jason Scott Conner, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Garland "Bud" Conner, Shawsville; a sister, Miss Freda E. Conner, Shawsville. on January 8, 1971.8
