Joanna Matilda Moore was buried at Corrie Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Illinois.4 She was born on December 14, 1871 at Lawrence Co., Illinois.5 As of July 14, 1888,her married name was Reed.1 She married Isaac Newton Reed, son of David R. Reed and Lida Lauretta Mosher, on July 14, 1888 at Lawrence Co., Illinois.1,2 Joanna Matilda Moore died on June 20, 1916 at Allendale, Wabash Co., Illinois, at age 44.6,3 She FIERCE STORM LEAVES DEATH IN ITS PATH Mrs. Isaac Reed Killed in Storm Which Passes Over section of Country Near Allendale Tuesday Night--- Husband and Son Are Badly Injured
HOUSE IS COMPLETELY WRECKED Other Buildings Are Wrecked---Storm Hits Vicinity of Friendsville---Ed. Leeds Loses His Barn and several Horses—Other Damage Mrs. Isaac Reed, about forty-five years of age, living a mile southeast of Allendale, was killed Tuesday night in one of the worst wind storms that has touched Wabash County in recent years. The Reed home was literally blown to pieces. Mr. Reed and their son Ben, a grown young man, were very seriously and probably fatally injured. Two other children, girls, aged about ten and twelve, were in the house. They were pretty badly bruised and scratched but not seriously injured. Following the storm the injured were taken to Allendale and given immediate relief. This morning Mr. Reed and the young man were rushed to the hospital at Vincennes. It is believed neither will recover. The boy had his head badly crushed. So far as has been learned no other persons were injured. The storm passed over Allendale and dropped down a mile southeast of there, carrying death and destruction in its path. In addition to the Allendale section a strip in the vicinity of Friendsville was also touched and considerable damage done. The storm broke south of Allendale some time before 10 o’clock. After it had passed and while the rain was still raging Allendale people in automobiles grew anxious fearing that possibly people had been injured or killed. They went in automobiles to the stricken section to investigate. The Reed home, which is located on the Joseph Keyser farm, was found in ruins. Help was secured and a search made in the ruins. When rescued none of the family was dead. Mrs. Reed lived until she was taken to the office of Dr. C. E. Gilliatt in Allendale. There she died of her injuries. The other members of the family were also taken to Allendale for treatment. At the time it was dark and still raining and it was feared that others were injured. Investigation this morning proved the contrary, however. The Reed family were buried in the debris of their wrecked home. After the injured were recovered Mr. Hartman of Allendale drove through the storm to St. Francisville and secured Dr. Brian who went to Allendale to assist Dr. Gilliatt in attending the injured. Several other buildings were either wrecked or damaged in the storm swept district. The barn of the Joseph Keyser place where the Reeds lived, was unroofed. The barn on the Mrs. Angle Armstrong place was also unroofed. The Armstrong school house was wrecked. The old McClain house was twisted around on its foundation. Howard Armstrong had a cow killed. Four miles north of Allendale Andrew Hershey had a barn struck by lightening and burned, with the contents. Among other things a fine stallion was burned with the building. It seems the storm in passing over dipped down in the vicinity of Friendsville and then passed on to Allendale before it dipped down again. Ed Leeds’ barn one mile southwest of Friendsville was completely wrecked by the wind. Four horses were killed and two so badly injured that it was necessary to kill them. The barn on the Annanias Litherland place was blown to pieces. One dead cow has been found in the debris. Whether more were killed or not is not known. John Wilkenson’s silo was blown down. Dr. G. C. Couch had a barn blown down near Friendsville. Marion Youngman’s smoke-house was blown away. A barn belonging to Mrs. Ballard in Friendsville was unroofed. Due to the storm wire communications to the stricken sections is bad today. Considerable other damage was done. The property loss in the two sections will be heavy. Several people went from Mt. Carmel to Allendale to see the damage done by the storm. Among the first was Dr. McIntosh who responded early to hold inquest over the body of Mrs. Reed. The storm struck first three quarters of a mile south of Allendale and swept east for two miles, hitting the earth just in spots. It was about 300 yards wide. The first damage done was on the J. W. Price place. It then jumped to the Keyser farm where the Reeds lived. The house was carried off its foundation and lifted forty feet. It was evidently turned over and over until it was torn to pieces. The floor and a heavy cook stove were 225 feet from the foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Reed and son were 90 feet from the foundation. Mrs. Reed was struck by some heavy object. Her skull and face were cut open. The boy had a fractured skull. Mr. Reed had some ribs torn from the spine. Mrs. Charley McWilliams of West Ninth Street, this city, is a daughter. on June 21, 1916.6
