She is survived by her husband, Stephen Sharkey of Roanoke, brother Edward Spruell of Roanoke, and sister Julie Spruell Jeffery of San Diego, California. She spent her childhood years moving around the South as the family followed her father's career in non-profit management. The family settled in Roanoke in 1970. She attended college at Mary Washington and East Carolina universities, graduating with a degree in business. Her most memorable role was as a children's librarian at the county library system. She loved books and music and classic films from the 1950s. She had a flare for decorating, nesting, and all things fashion.
