Born on May 8, 1939, in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Harry Steele Gay and Ethel Blair Gay. He was predeceased by a brother, Kenny Gay. Mr. Gay was a member at Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church and was a Navy Veteran. He was an employee of the Lane Company for over 25 years and also worked for L.C. Trucking. Tommy enjoyed traveling and outings with friends. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Bowling Gay of the residence; one son, Ricky Lee Saunders and Tammy; one brother, David Gay and Lisa; three sisters, Pat Dunn and Gerald, Phyllis Farris and Tommy, and Susan Shelton and Len; three grandchildren, Gwen Saunders, Matt Saunders and Ricky Saunders, Jr; and one great-grandchild, Gabe Layne. Duncan; a son, Douglas Duncan of Winston-Salem, two brothers, R. W. Wright and Stockton E. Wright, both of Smithfield; and a grandson. Burial will be in St. Luke's Cemetery, Benns Church. on February 24, 1982.6

He leaves behind his loving wife of 27 years, Rebecca L. "Becky" Craft; three daughters; Kaitlyn Alexis Craft (Christopher Traxel) of Salem, Amanda Dawn Snead (Jonathan King) of Roanoke, and Miranda Snead-Robertson (Chrissy Robertson) of Vinton. John was a family man; he was known by many names and titles in his lifetime, but his favorites were husband, dad, Poppy, and Paw Paw. He had seven grandchildren that he loved more than life itself. Throughout John's life, he did many things that others could only dream of. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, owned multiple businesses over the years, and was an employee of the City of Roanoke from 1994 until 2005. John was a diehard Chicago Bears fan his entire life. He enjoyed many things, but Sunday Night Football was a must in the Craft household.
