Hale; three children and their spouses, Rob and Elaine Hale, of Roanoke, Becky and Randy Pritchard, of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Janice and Sherman Rucker, of Palm Coast, Fla; five grandchildren, Luke Hale, Stephanie, Randy and Kevin Pritchard, and Brandon Rucker; and her sister, Doris Martin and husband, Bob, of Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Church of the Brethren, 2001 Carroll Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24017. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2010, from the First Church of the Brethren. Pastor Dava Hensley will officiate. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Burial was In East Hill cemetery and was in charge of the American Legion. The deceased was a cousin of J. I. Clingenpeel, secretary of the Bluefield Coal and Coke company, this city, and has many relatives in this section. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Conner, of Evansville; his mother, Mrs. Kate Conner, of Salem; five sisters, Mrs. Gaynor Harman, of Christiansburg; Mrs. B. W. Wilkinson, of Clarksburg, Misses Mary and Josephine Conner, of Salem; Miss Eva Conner, of Richmond; and three brothers, Robert Conner, of Manila, P. I. Andrew Conner, of Welch and Tice Conner, of Salem. (he comitted suicide by hanging in the city jail) on August 9, 1936.2

She was valedictorian of the 1958 class at Check High School and then attended Berea College. With a BS degree in nursing, she began working as a registered nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center in 1962, and in 1965 she joined the faculty of the hospital's School of Nursing. She married David W. Shank of Floyd County in 1960, and they had three children. The family moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1967, and Mrs. Shank worked at George Washington University Hospital until her husband, a federal government employee, was transferred overseas. They lived in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Arlington before he retired in 1992. Mrs. Shank worked as a registered nurse for the Department of State in Africa and as an editor and contracts officer for the federal government before retiring in 2000. Survivors include her husband; son, Eric Ian Shank, Check; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Elaine and Takayoshi Monma, Ashburn; son and daughter-in-law, John Tonsa and Marie Ann Schweinberg Shank, Mesa, Ariz; grandchildren, Cassidy Dawn Grubbs and spouse, Matthew Munson, Roanoke, James Douglas and Hannah Lane Shank, Kingsport, Tenn., Daichi Eli Monma, Charlottesville, Kathryn Ann Shank, Mesa, Ariz, Christopher Ethan Jaime, Mesa, Ariz, Jacob Christian Shank, Clarksburg, Md., Rowen Charlie Monma, Georgi Ethan Monma, and Elissa Rose Monma, Ashburn; sister, Sheila Goff, Salem; sister and brother-in-law, Debi and Joseph Heines, Alexandria; and multiple nieces and nephews. on February 28, 2023.1
