Jerry Wayne Blackford was buried at Brookside Cemetery, Campbellsville, Taylor Co., Kentucky.2,4,5 She was born on August 14, 1945 at Roanoke, Virginia.2,5,6 She died on May 3, 1955 at Campbellsville, Taylor Co., Kentucky, at age 9.2,3,5 She A 9-year-old boy was shot to death here yesterday while playing "cops and robbers" with a 4-year-old companion. Dr. W. W. Shepherd, Taylor County Coroner, said a .22-caliber rifle bullet entered the back of the boy's skull, circled inside the skull, and almost came back out within an inch of the place of entry. The bullet apparently ricocheted on some bone structure. The victim was Jerry Wayne Blackford, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. "Pete" Blackford. He died about 3:45 p.m. in the upstairs closet of a neighbor, Mrs. Catherine Edwards Phillips. Dr. Shepherd said the boy was shot by Mrs. Phillips' son, Bobby. A coroner's jury returned a verdict of accidental homicide. Dr. Shepherd said Bobby told him that he and Jerry had gone upstairs in the Phillips home to get some toys. They found a .22-caliber rifle in the closet and "started to play robbers," Bobby said. Jerry had a cap pistol. Bobby said he pulled the trigger on the rifle, not knowing it was loaded, and Jerry fell over in the closet. The Phillips boy then ran downstairs and told his mother. "I didn't mean to do it," he was quoted as saying. Dr. Shepherd said he was puzzled when he found the bullet near the place of entry. An x-ray showed the bullet had gone around inside the skull. Besides his parents, the boy is survived by three sisters, Miss Sandra Blackford, Campbellsville, and Misses Barbara and Dorothy Blackford, both of Roanoke, Va., and grandparents, Mrs. R. E. Lyon, Glasgow, Ky., and Lee Blackford, Russellville, Ky. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. on May 5, 1955.4
