She was forty-seven years old, and had been blind since childhood, the blindness resulting from a fall in which she struck her head and paralyzed the optical nerves. She was a daughter of A. L. Cole, who resides at Jumping Branch, and a niece of J. M. and H. V. Dunn, of this city. Her mother died when Miss Cole was an infant, and the father soon remarried. She was educated at Romney in the state school for the deaf, dumb, and blind. Funeral services were held Wednesday with interment in Mt. Tabor cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. W. W. Webb and Rev. W. H. Foglesong. on May 12, 1922.5

She had lived in Charleston for the past 30 years and was a member of the First Methodist Church of St. Albans. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Farley of Beaver and Mrs. Gladys Lewis of Bladenburg, Md; six sons, H. C. of Oak Hill, O. K. of Charleston, Raymond of Saint Albans, Theron of Crow, Lucian of Sandstone and Oris of Tucson, Ariz; three half sisters, Mrs. Vecie Waddell of Jumping Branch, Mrs. Lou Kizner of Covington, Va. and Mrs. Iva Todd of Huntington; 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. C. H. Martin and Rev. Virgil Cook in charge. Burial will be in the Calfee Cemetery at Mount Tabor. Friends may call at the Calfee Funeral Home after 2 p.m. today and the body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. on March 29, 1967.1

     Ballard Lucian Cole was buried at Stanaford Cemetery, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2 He was born on February 4, 1857 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,2 He married Virginia Ellen Bailey on April 11, 1880 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.1,6 Ballard Lucian Cole died on April 24, 1952 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 95.2,5 He Ballard L. Cole, 95, whose father was the first man to settle in Beckley more than a century ago, died at 9:30 a.m. yesterday in a local hospital following an extended illness. Cole was the son of James Cole who came to Raleigh County from Floyd County, Va., in 1842. He made his home with his daughter, Miss Anna Cole of Stanaford, and was a member of the Church of Christ. His birthplace was his father's farmhouse located where the Memorial Building now stands on South Kanawha Street. A farmer most of his life, Cole was married to Virginia Ellen Bailey in 1873. She preceded him in death. Among 124 descendants of Cole who survive him are five sons, Fred Cole of Stanaford, Carl of Beckley and Pierce, Roy and Lon all of Ramsey; three daughters, Miss Cole of Stanaford; Mrs. W. E. Johnson of Lanark and Mrs. L. R. Guilliam of Stanaford; 52 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren. The body was taken to Quesenberry and Webb Funeral Home pending further arrangements. Cole was reportedly was a witness to the only execution of a Raleigh Countian for the crime of murder. The execution, in the form of a hanging, took place on Oct 3, 1890, at the corner of Valley Drive and Piney Avenue. The man who was hanged was William I. Martin of Brooklyn, near Hinton, who murdered his wife. on April 25, 1952.5
