She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack W. Brendle Sr; her second husband, Worthy K. Keener Sr; and her son, Jack W. Brendle Jr. Survivors include a son, W.K. "Ike" Keener Jr. and wife Elaine of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Melinda Kinlaw and husband Acie Jr. of Wilmington, Sandra Myers and husband Carl and Doretha Craver and husband John of Winston-Salem; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard N. Carper and William Carper of Maryland; a sister, Mildred Griffin of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. In Mrs. Keener's death, the family gratefully acknowledges Karen Walker of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home and the Rev. Patricia Garner of Trinity Moravian Church. on May 26, 2003.4

Richard was born July 21, 1925 in Kernersville North Carolina then moved to Winston Salem where he spent most of his childhood. He graduated from John W. Hanes High School before attending St. Bonaventure College in Orlean New York. Richard then enlisted in the US Army from 1941-1945 serving in WWII. He moved to Woodbridge in 1962 and began working for Safeway where he worked for 36 years before retiring in 1991. Richard was very active in the community, volunteering his time at the Woodbridge Little League and Sports Club, the Boosters for Woodbridge Senior High School and was a member of the American Legion.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Calvin Lee Hawley; son, John Hawley and wife Heather; parents, Archie and Lena McAlexander; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lane and Pam McAlexander, Billy and Lisha McAlexander, Steve and Wanda McAlexander; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Terry Epperly, Dee and Eddie Shumate; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Nancy Hawley, Gerald and Hazel Link, Melba Bower, Polly and Milo Simmons; grandchildren, Trinity, Serenity, John, Harmony and Zachary Hawley; numerous aunts, uncles, cousin, nieces, and nephews. Interment in the Saint Matthew Cemetery. on November 19, 2017.2
