Roads east and west of Welch were blocked, in some places being under five or six feet of water. A coal tipple at Rolfe, and a number of small houses along the river bank at Keystone, Northfork and Superior were washed away, and basements of about 20 stores were flooded. Damage in the Elkhorn valley was estimated to reach at least $100,000. Much damage was done in Mercer county where eight lives were lost and bridges and sections of rail lines washed away. The fatalities occurred on Crane creek near the tipple of the American Coal company. A huge pile of slate undermined by the water, crashed onto a house at the foot of the pile, burying seven people. The eighth victim was a member of a rescue party. The dead: Mrs. Shellmon C. Vest and 5-year-old son; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Dewese, Mrs. Toney Dewese and two daughters, 2 and 5 years of age, and Amelio Premoveno, the last named being a member of a rescue party. It may be several days, it was said, before the bodies can be recovered from under the slate. on June 10, 1924.5

Crowe died on October 18, 2000 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 72.2,11,12,8,14 He PRINCETON - Perry Crowe, 72, of Hill Street, Princeton, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family early Wednesday morning, Oct. 18, 2000 at the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Va. Born Oct. 6, 1928, in Corrine, he was the son of the late Albert Crowe and Letha Mae Hall Crowe Farley. He had served with the U.S. Army during World War II having received the World War II Victory Medal. He was well known and much liked in the Princeton and surrounding area, having worked for the Betsy Ross Bakery in Bluefield, having operated the Texaco Service Station on S. Walker Street in Princeton and was employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways with the Security Department for the past 25 years. He was a member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan G. Crowe George in December 1999; and a sister, Maxine Wiley Smith. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret Louise Sarver Crowe; two devoted daughters, Brenda K. Crowe and Jennifer L. Crowe, both of Princeton; two grandchildren, Troy C. Price and Shelicia N. Billings, both of Lerona; one sister, Anna Mae Crowe of Frinceton; one brother, Preston Crowe and wife, Ann of Princeton; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with the Rev. David Jasper officiating. Burial will follow in the Hall Family Cemetery on the Halls Ridge Road near Princeton. Pallbearers will be Matthew and Jackie Barker, Steven Hamrick, Timothy Blankenship, Eddie and Butch McPeak. on October 20, 2000.8

Educated in Mercer County, she had spent the majority of her life living on McNutt Avenue in Princeton, she was a former employee for the Loven Oven and the Holiday Inn of Princeton. Mrs. Hall was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Evelyene Grimm. Left to cherish her memory, her loving children, Linda Jones and husband, Paul of Elgood, Darlene Radford, Kenneth L. Lilly, John Lee Lilly and Joseph Allen Hall, all of Princeton, and Paul David Lilly and Donna Lisa Gayle Musleh, both of Martinsville, Va; 18 grandchildren, 29 greatgrandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, brothers, William Paul Cecil of Christiansburg, Va., Robert L. Cecil and wife, Ila of Odessa, Del., James A. Everidge and wife, Norma of Lerona, and Earl C. Cecil of Princeton; and aunts and uncles, Bonnie Hall, Dorothy Harvey and Thurman Hall, all of Princeton. Mrs. Hall loved her dog Mac very much. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Hall Family Cemetery on the Halls Ridge Road near Princeton. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Mike Griffith, Matthew Barker, Gary and Noland Woodring, John Lawson and Dale Smith Jr. on September 2, 2003.6
